What does it mean to take the Are You IN pledge? It means joining over 700 people who are working to make communities accessible and welcoming for people with disabilities. Your work might be big community projects, or small one-on-one interactions. Here are just a few examples: Hiring qualified candidates with disabilities, correcting someone who uses the โ€œRโ€ word, building risen accessible planters in a community garden, and having people with disabilities on your boards and committees. Does that sound like you... or someone you want to be? Take the pledge today!

In 2008, the U.S. Department of Justice investigated the Central Virginia Training Center and found that Virginia needed to offer more inclusive housing options. The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) went to work for the Settlement Agreement population (SAP)! Virginia continues to expand inclusive housing opportunities every year! In December of 2024, DBHDS reported that 2,275 people in SAP were housed in the community, compared to 1,860 in 2022. Welcome (in)! The โ€œAre You (in)" campaign believes that communities are strongest when places and spaces are welcoming to everyone who lives there. We focus on 3 main areas: Community, Employment, and Housing. Community: Disability itself is not a barrier - but a lack of accessibility to the places and spaces we share is. Employment: Employers need to understand that people with disabilities can and want to work competitively. Housing: Physical spaces and application processes need to be accessible and unbiased. If you want to be (in), visit youcanbeinclusive.org to learn more! We will keep the door open for you!
