Next up in our teacher spotlight is John Sheets, our 5th and 6th grade teacher!

John has been writing the RFS story (in cursive, of course!) for almost 30 years. He feels lucky that, rather than following the curriculum of the day, he gets to do what works for each group of students in his care. In John’s classroom, students take the lead, choose engaging books about diverse characters, learn where to find trustworthy information, and practice winning and losing with respect for the other side. They’re given just the right challenge in spelling and math, and they learn when and how to help others. Most of all, John’s students grow academically and socially in a classroom that supports each of them as individuals.

For most of our littlest learners, Trueblood is their very first experience of school, and Allie hopes they leave knowing that school can be a joyful place. It’s where they find friends and trusted adults, feel safe being themselves, and get to be curious about everything, from hiking Earlham’s back campus in rain boots to freely exploring art materials in the classroom. As the parent of two RFS students herself, Allie loves nurturing a sense of stewardship in these children and watching them grow throughout their RFS journey.

Next up in our teacher spotlight is Laura Sheets, our 1st and 2nd grade teacher!

Laura isn’t afraid to wade right in! She loves that RFS doesn’t just allow her but encourages her to do her favorite things with students: growing their independence alongside their trust in community, their self-regulation alongside their ability to put their needs into words, and their creativity alongside their success at doing work correctly. Most of all, Laura hopes her students find delight in a variety of classmates, in learning, and in handling the unexpected (like discovering what’s hiding under the rocks in a creek!).

Over the next few weeks of our Capital Campaign we will be highlighting each of our teachers who make our school so incredible! First is our 7th and 8th grade lead teacher, Greg.

We are thrilled to officially launch the public phase of our capital campaign: Her Vision. Our Future. The Capital Campaign for the Chris Nicholson Faculty Chair.

For months, Head of School Becky Dimick Eastman and our dedicated board have been working behind the scenes to lay the foundation for something truly special. Thanks to their hard work and our early supporters, we have already raised $558,729—reaching 93% of our $600,000 goal during our silent phase!

There is no better way to honor Chris’s enduring impact and support Richmond Friends School than by investing in our teachers. They are the heart of what makes our school so special. Guided by Quaker principles, they do much more than teach academics—they nurture the whole child, recognizing that each student is unique and gifted in diverse ways. Yesterday's All School Meeting was a lot of fun with a focus on Hispanic Heritage Month! Becky incorporated our S.P.I.C.E.S. and focused on "Community" within her activities. Our student Buddy Groups got to hear a fun story incorporating Spanish words and phrases and then worked together to consider ideas of how we could welcome a new person or family to our greater community if they moved here from a different country.

Did you know that we have time set aside each week for an All School Meeting? Every Wednesday morning everyone from our Pre-K students to our 8th graders gathers together for some quiet reflection and an activity guided by one of our RFS staff or sometimes even by one of our classes. Today our Pre-K/Kindergarten class put on a play for everyone complete with costumes they'd made! Way to go, friends!
