Saturday Study: First Book of Kings

Elijah had just witnessed one of the greatest victories of his ministry — and yet, in the very next chapter, we find him running for his life, sitting under a broom tree, telling God he's had enough. That kind of collapse after a mountaintop moment is more common than we often admit.

What's striking is God's response. No rebuke. No "snap out of it." Just food, rest, and eventually a still, small voice — meeting Elijah exactly where he was before ever addressing where he needed to go.

You are not alone.

Those four words can mean everything to someone who feels like they're drowning in the dark. Mental health struggles are real, and they don't discriminate, but neither does the love of God. As it says in Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." He sees you in your sleepless nights. He hears the prayers you can't find the words to say. And He places people in your life to remind you that you were never meant to carry this alone. Today, let's break the silence, extend grace instead of judgment, and be the hands and feet of Christ for those who are hurting. Reach out. Pray. Listen. You are loved, you are seen, and you are not alone. 🙏💙

Did You Know? 🤔

In 1854, President Franklin Pierce vetoed a bill championed by reformer Dorothea Dix that would have sent federal funds to states to help people with mental illness. His reasoning? He argued it would turn states into permanent dependents of federal charity, an argument still echoed in grant-funding debates today.

Why this matters: The tension between federal support and local independence isn't new. Nearly 170 years later, we're still wrestling with the same question: How do we fund the causes that matter without creating dependency?

The Brotherhood Mutual Foundation, a Fort Wayne, Indiana-based nonprofit, has closed applications for its 2026 Kingdom Advancing Grant, which distributes up to $150,000 annually to churches running community outreach programs, according to the foundation. Recipients will be confirmed by July 31, 2026, with all applicants notified by email or mail.

Since the program launched in 2022, 34 churches have received grants ranging from $2,500 to $35,000, the foundation said. Eligible programs must be overseen by a 501(c)(3) church in the continental U.S., aim to connect people to Jesus, and demonstrate a creative approach that could be sustained and replicated by other congregations. Applications are reviewed by the foundation's Granting Council, made up of pastors and ministry leaders from around the country.

The foundation has already set a timeline for its next cycle: applications open January 4, 2027, and close March 31, 2027, with decisions expected by July 31, 2027.
