New to grant hunting? Start with your network, not a database.

Most beginners jump straight to Grants.gov and get overwhelmed by thousands of results. Instead, start with the people you already know — your university's sponsored research office, a mentor who's successfully secured funding, professional associations you're part of, or colleagues at other organizations. Ask them: "What grants have you applied for or received? What's on your radar?"

This approach works for three reasons:

You skip the noise. People can point you to specific programs that fit, rather than you guessing keywords.
You get insider context. They'll share things a database won't — which program officers are responsive, which agencies are actually funding right now, and what review panels tend to favor.
You learn the language. Reading successful proposals from people you know teaches you more about framing your work than any guidebook.
Once you've gathered 3–5 solid leads from your network, use databases to find similar programs and expand your list. But start with people, not portals.

If you're waiting on an acceptance or denial from the Nonprofit Security Grant Program, don't assume you'll hear about it automatically — especially if a grant writing company or consultant submitted the application on your behalf.

Make sure you know:
✅ Who submitted the application (your organization or a third party?)
✅ What email address or portal was used
✅ How and where notifications will be delivered
