After missing 100 species by just FOUR birds yesterday, the Saltine Quackers headed to Marshlands Conservancy and Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in search of more species — and finally crossed the 100 mark.

We also got to hear from amazing Earlham alums about where their love of birding began.

72 hours. Hundreds of birds to see. Hold on to your binoculars, the Saltine Quackers are back.

Day 1 took us from Albany to Manomet Conservation Sciences, where we spotted some incredible species — including a Piping Plover.

The goal for the day? 100 species.

Did we hit it? Good question.

It’s almost time to celebrate Big Birding Day, the 40-plus year tradition where the Earlham community counts bird species and raises funds for the College. Join us from May 8-10 as we count all the species! 🦜

You can join in on the fun in a few ways:

- Follow along with the road-tripping birders to the East Coast

What a day. What a community. 😍

Because of you, Earlham Day reached new heights:
🔸 3,278 donors
🔹$1,705,368 raised
🌏 Support from all 50 states and 40 countries

Together, we didn’t just meet our goal of 2,400 donors, we surpassed it by 878 and set a new record in the 12-year history of Earlham Day (130% growth from our biggest year in 2020). 🎉

Across time zones and generations, every gift and message had a powerful reflection of a community that continues to show up for one another and for the future of Earlham.

Earlham Day keeps getting better. 🎉

The celebration continued with our Spring Awards Convocation, recognizing outstanding students across disciplines and honoring the incredible work happening all across campus. Our students continue to inspire us, on campus and beyond.

And together, we’ve already accomplished so much:
✅ All 50 states reached
✅ 2,400 donor goal surpassed

But there’s still more within reach!

An anonymous $100,000 gift has DOUBLED the match. Each of the next 500 donors unlocks $400. We’re now fewer than 100 donors away from meeting that challenge. 🎉

Rose León-Alvarado, Class of 24 has been awarded the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship, becoming both the first Earlham College graduate and the first from Honduras to receive the award. 🎉

León-Alvarado will pursue a Master of Philosophy in Basic and Translational Neuroscience on full scholarship at the University of Cambridge in England, beginning in fall 2026. 🌏📚

“I would have not gotten this far without Earlham,” León-Alvarado said. “Earlham allowed me to pursue all of my passions, and not in a moment did it come at the expense of my academics." ✨

“I had strong mentors inside and outside the classroom who helped me navigate my academic responsibilities and make the connections I needed,” she said. “I learned how to manage my time while exploring my passions and finding what I want to do.” ✨

León-Alvarado’s selection continues Earlham’s strong tradition of firsts in earning internationally recognized fellowships and scholarships. 🏆
