RHODE ISLAND AFL-CIO Endorses Helena Foulkes for Governor
Convention Delegates also vote to support Kim Ahern for Attorney General

Earlier tonight, nearly 200 union delegates representing local unions from across Rhode Island voted unanimously to endorse Helena Foulkes for Governor in the upcoming November election. The support comes after Ms. Foulkes and her two main opponents, Mr. Ken Block, and Mr. Aaron Guckian, addressed the delegates seeking their support.

“We are proud to support Helena for Governor in November,” said Patrick Crowley, President of the Rhode Island AFL-CIO. We believe she shares our concerns about affordability for working class Rhode Islanders and will stand up to the Trump Administration and its attempts to make life harder and more expensive for working people. Rhode Island is a Labor State, and we look forward to working with Helena and her team to ensure the goals and values of organized labor are heard loud and clear.”

Earlier this year, the Rhode Island AFL-CIO voted to stay neutral in the Democratic Party primary. “I said at the time, during the primary election, our consensus was we didn’t have a consensus on an endorsement. Now that the primary is over, we will be working hard to elect Helena Foulkes in the General Election.”

The delegates also unanimously voted to endorse Kim Ahern for Attorney General. The Rhode Island AFL-CIO also voted to stay neutral in the primary election. “Kim Ahern is a tremendous leader and will make a great Attorney General. Whether it is concerning our broken health care system or fighting against wage theft from unscrupulous employers, we believe Kim has the right skills to protect all of our rights as Rhode Islanders.
The Rhode Island AFL-CIO represents nearly 275 local unions and nearly 80,000 union members across the Ocean State.

"Check with corporate"

In July, a 911 call for a fire in a conveyor belt on the second floor of the Johnston facility raised additional concerns about fire safety and cooperation by the retail giant.

No one had pulled the fire alarm, which delayed the response time, Calci said. Workers were told about the fire via two-way radio and ordered to leave the building.

When firefighters arrived, they were forced to push through a bottleneck of about 850 Amazon employees who were all trying to flee through the front entrance, instead of the 55 emergency exits that ring the building, Calci said.

“They have a very long distance to walk in that building,” Calci said. “So that was obviously a huge public safety concern for all of us.”

While Stephenson said the employees had cut the power to the equipment, the fire chief said that Amazon officials balked when they were told to cut power to that area of the building, saying they needed to “check with corporate.”

Johnston Fire Department has responded to the Amazon facility about 200 times since July 2025.
