From Tom Aquino Hope High School theatre/auditorium. Broken seats, leaky roof in many areas, falling plaster, faulty electrical. Off limits for any activities. Unsafe conditions without a doubt. Initiative since 2010 for my reason to start a project to renovate. RIDE came along and decided the same. I plan on putting together a photo presentation to show the kids and new teachers what the auditorium looked like before it was renovated.

I am so excited to announce that I have been accepted to Studio Art College International (SACI) no in Florence, Italy! I am thankful to be blessed with the opportunity to study abroad, and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend the first semester of my senior year.

When I made the decision to move to DC and study psychology at American University (AU), I never imagined that I would add Studio art as a second major. I took an interest in art at a very young age and it has since become a passion of mine.

It was an honor to have my work on display at my school in the Kazten Arts Center, and I am overjoyed to have had my work recognized by the Dean of Students and chosen to be on permanent display in their offices. I never thought I could pursuit art, but with the endless support and encouragement from my family, friends and my professors at AU, I have built so much confidence in myself over the past few years.

Traveling to Italy and becoming a student at SACI is the push I need to become closer to the person I strive to be. I am hopeful that it will be an opportunity for self discovery and artistic exploration. I am eager to learn and continue growing and I believe that the SACI program is the perfect opportunity to do just that.

I am raising money for my study abroad because I can’t ignore the financial burden this has placed on my mom, (Yhonna Bailey) who has always been nothing but supportive of my dreams. She has never failed to do everything in her power to make sure that I was not limited by our financial situation. I intend to follow her example by taking the initiative to help support her in funding my education. All donations will be used toward tuition, housing and travel expenses. I would be eternally grateful for any donation you can make toward my semester in Italy.

Thank you,
Ashan’ti Stevens
