This summer will see America celebrate its 250th anniversary while the US government conducts extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean, conducts a fuel blockade of Cuba in violation of international law, fights a questionable war in Iran, all while ICE agents assault migrants and citizens in the streets, at work, and at home. The very pillars of truths laid forth in the Declaration of Independence and the founding principles of the new nation, for political equality, universal rights, and sovereignty of the people, feels unstable. America, the grand experiment was always flawed with its base built in white supremacy, but still through the work of dedicated individuals and communities fought to realize a nation where all are equal and have the right and means to pursue life, liberty, and happiness .

What can we glean from our American experience? What memories, experiences, artifacts, knowledge can we carry with us, to build a new foundation for an America that understands its past, acknowledges its failures, celebrates diversity, stewards the earth, and builds a just and equitable society into a sustainable future for all?

Through personal and imaginative perspectives this exhibition welcomes visions of America rooted in resilience, beauty, community, and collective resistance both now and 250 years into the future

A Need for Nostalgia | Davina Alejo

Nostalgia & More is a contemporary art company focused on access to urban street art across the tri-state area of RI/MA/CT. Offering classes and customs with a focus on alternative views such as political expression through animation stills. N&M mixes pop culture with culturally pivotal events to capture like-minded audiences. Themes presented include sexism, 90’s nostalgia, and inclusive pop art. N&M incorporates die-cut silhouettes and tactile mediums testing the boundaries of conventional mixed-media artwork. Materials used include wood, resin, clay, glitter, and various up-cycled finds.

O, Beautiful | Rebecca Macri

The inception of this body of work was seeing pickup trucks flying giant American flags. It felt like aggressive shorthand for white nationalism. Since when did the racists get to claim this symbol of our country? It bothered me.

I started thinking about how to reclaim the American flag, to extricate it from hypermasculine, aggressive associations. I began making small multimedia and painted flags on paper. Branching out from red, white, and blue into a full spectrum of colors, I imagined a kinder, gentler country that recognizes and celebrates diversity of all types. From there, I brainstormed other symbols that could be similarly re-imagined, including the bald eagle, the divine eye of providence (from the back of the dollar bill), and the Statue of Liberty.

For this show, I was drawn to making textile pieces for several reasons. First, textiles represent softness and comfort. They feel inherently feminine to me because of their history as “women’s work”. Second, there’s an abundance of second-hand yarn and fabric. Thrifting and recycling is one small way I can reduce consumption and environmental impact. Third, there’s a meditative peace when working with tactile materials that’s an antidote to overwhelm and despair.

The “O, Beautiful” paintings are abstracted landscapes loosely based on geometric patterns found in cultures throughout history. I didn’t want to reference any specific culture that wasn’t mine to reference. But I did want to pick up some of the threads that connect us as humans - the impulse to beautify our surroundings and experience deep connection with nature.

As America turns 250 years old, I recognize the darkness we are facing. Our country has been usurped by war criminals and grifters. Life has gotten harder in so many ways. Unfortunately I can’t impeach anybody, but I can work every day to build joy and connection and beauty - the things that make life worth living and are worth fighting for.

You Might be as Flawed as Me | Mark Gleicher

For the last 30 years, I have worked as an artist primarily on the South Coast of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Working as a painter, sculptor, and photographer, I have toiled away in small studios, driven by a creative fantasy of expressing any feeling. In reality, this pursuit has been challenging as I search for emotions yet unfelt. I often tell myself that if I achieve enough clarity to grant forgiveness to humanity for its transgressions, I might find momentary satisfaction. Eventually, I return to the characters that populate the surfaces I collect.

I frequently seek inspiration and new perspectives through travel and education. As a father, I have been energized by the process of creating with my daughter, and I find my best collaborators in friends and strangers. Since moving to Little Compton, RI, I have settled into a backyard studio. Having achieved my goal of showing work in New York City this past year, and after a long run at various local spots, I feel I am currently at the height of my creative powers.

Exhibiting again at AS220 feels like a homecoming. It is where I had my first solo exhibition in 1998 and later showed with Willa Mamet in the early 2000s. I feel I am back at the beginning, ready to start again as I move toward whatever comes next.

Took a trip out to Little Compton to visit Mark Gleicher’s studio and get a closer look at the work coming to the Main Gallery this July.

Mark will be exhibiting at AS220 Galleries with an opening reception on Thursday, July 11, from 5–7 PM.

And of course, we had to make one very important business stop along the way: ice cream at Gray’s 🍦🍦🍦

What’s your favorite color? | Raquel and Michel Davis

Artist/show statement: I first picked up a camera when I was 10, hiking in Yellowstone National Park with my Dad and I’ve had one somewhere nearby ever since. There is something deeply comforting in the constancy of a camera and the photographs it takes. From California to Rhode Island, from middle school to medical school my camera is always there to capture a discreet moment in time. From those first photos in Yellowstone, nature has always been my inspiration. No matter what is happening in the world, nature is always there full of life, joy, and every color of the rainbow.
