Rhode Island Humanities and RISCA - Rhode Island State Council on the Arts have partnered to celebrate National Arts and Humanities Month this October! This year’s theme, The Mosaic We Make, pays tribute to how arts and humanities assist us to understand where we come from, who we are, and how we can build a better future.

Both Councils invite you to celebrate National Arts and Humanities Month by participating in happenings that are meaningful to you and your community. Spread the word by communicating the importance of arts and humanities to friends, family, neighbors and community leaders.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on August 28 for “Revolutionary Traces: A Conversation About Commemoration” at Rhode Island Historical Society’s Aldrich House. The wide-ranging discussion focused on the ways that stories of Rhode Islanders that are often left out of narratives of the Revolutionary period have been made visible by different projects and approaches.

As a result of Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) funding cuts to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in April 2025, RI Humanities was forced to pause our active 2025 major grant program. We are able to fulfill these grants after gaining partial access to our federal funds.

While we are unable to resume the federally funded grantmaking program beyond the 2025 major grants at this time, we continue to work towards the full restoration of our funding at the level that Congress appropriated.

Last week, Rhode Islanders gathered at the Providence Public Library for a conversation with U.S. Senator Jack Reed, RI Humanities Executive Director Elizabeth Francis, and RI State Council on the Arts Executive Director Todd Trebour. The conversation focused on the status of the federal cultural agencies, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, and the overall impact of cultural agencies in Rhode Island. The event was also a valuable and lively opportunity for those who work in the arts, culture, and humanities sectors in the state to connect with one another.
