People around the world have been deeply saddened by the devastating flash floods and mudslides that struck Nepal on August 26. The disaster has caused loss of life, injuries, displacement, and extensive damage in the Nepal-Tibet border region near the Rasuwagadhi-Gyirong crossing. Roads, transportation networks, and critical infrastructure have also been severely disrupted.
The floods are also affecting our community close to home. We are already in close contact with monks and nuns at Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu whose families have been directly affected by the flooding.

In light of the catastrophic flooding that recently hit Nepal and Tibet, FPMT has launched the FPMT Emergency Relief Fund to provide immediate support to affected communities. This fund assists individuals and families impacted by natural disasters, emergency situations at FPMT centers and projects, and other urgent crises requiring swift aid.

We are currently utilizing this fund to raise relief funds for those impacted by the flooding that occurred on August 26 along the Bhote Koshi River on the Nepal-Tibet border. The floodwaters have swept away entire villages, homes, roads, bridges, and essential infrastructure across Rasuwa and neighboring districts. The scale of this disaster is still unfolding, with many people remaining unaccounted for and entire communities displaced.
FPMT is working directly with Kopan Monastery to identify those most in need and help ensure that support reaches affected families directly.

As we prepared to publish our latest newsletter, we learned of the recent heartbreaking destruction at the Nepal-Tibet border. We offer our most sincere prayers to all affected by this devastation and share recommended practices for natural disasters.

Please note that a partial lunar eclipse will occur in the Americas, Europe, and Africa on August 27 and 28, and this is an excellent time to offer prayers, as the results are multiplied 700,000 times.

L’Unione Buddhista Italiana esprime il proprio dolore per le vittime e la vicinanza alla popolazione colpita e verificherà nelle prossime ore le possibili forme di aiuto per le comunità locali.

Milano 26 agosto 2026 – Oggi alle 9 circa locali (le 5 in Italia), una violenta alluvione improvvisa ha colpito il distretto di Rasuwa, nel nord del Nepal, al confine con il Tibet. La piena del fiume Bhotekoshi ha travolto abitazioni e infrastrutture, causando vittime e numerosi dispersi, tra cui anche turisti stranieri, e provocando ingenti danni a villaggi, strade, ponti e impianti idroelettrici.
Filippo Scianna, Presidente dell’Unione Buddhista Italiana dichiara: “L’Unione Buddhista Italiana esprime la propria profonda vicinanza alla popolazione del Nepal e alle famiglie colpite. In questo momento di immenso dolore, il nostro pensiero va a tutte le persone che hanno perso i propri cari, le loro case e i luoghi della loro vita quotidiana, e a quanti attendono ancora notizie dei propri familiari. Il nostro pensiero va inoltre a tutti coloro che con coraggio, compassione e dedizione, sono impegnati nelle operazioni di soccorso. L’Unione Buddhista Italiana verificherà nelle prossime ore le possibili forme di aiuto per le comunità locali.”

Our hearts are with everyone affected by the devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet. We hold those who have lost loved ones, those awaiting news, and all helping with rescue efforts in our thoughts and prayers.

To our Nepalese and Tibetan communities, who share such a special connection with the Great Stupa, we stand beside you in sorrow and compassion.

May all those affected find strength, comfort and support in the days ahead 🙏
