WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood kicked off the new year with a wonderful evening under the stars. Our Membership Committee promised, "Come for the sukkah. Stay for the conversation. Leave with some new friends," and they truly delivered! We had a fantastic time at the Sukkah Schmooze Under the Stars. Cantor Emerita Ida Rae Cahana and Rabbi Michael Cahana were gracious hosts, warmly welcoming us into their home and sukkah. It was a delightful evening filled with delicious bites and sips, laughter, and new connections. After schmoozing and noshing, we gathered in the sukkah to shake the lulav and etrog - what a beautiful and meaningful way to connect with our Jewish community!

To everyone who joined us, both old friends and new, thank you for coming. We can't wait to see you at our next event! A big thank you to our Membership co-chairs, Michelle-Shari and Elaine, and committee members Meredith and Lynn for planning such a lovely evening. And a very special Toda Raba to the Cahanas for opening their home to us.

As Sukkot comes to an end, we reach a period of great celebration. We have all the blessings of Shabbat. And on Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, we complete the annual reading of the Torah and prepare to start again from the beginning. We celebrate the joy of Torah with music, song, and community. Let's sing, dance, and begin again together. We wish you much joy and many fresh starts as we go into the new year together. Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach!

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sukkot Sameach! Shabbat comes faithfully to us as a gift from God, bringing peace, love, connection, and rest. Sukkot reminds us that the world is full of good and beautiful things, and we should rejoice. May you be blessed with the peace of Shabbat and the joy of Sukkot. The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuvah (or Shabbat Teshuvah), which means the "Sabbath of Return" or "Sabbath of Repentance."

In the wise words of Rabbi Rachel Joseph of Congregation Beth Israel:

" We have left Rosh Hashanah behind, but Yom Kippur has not yet arrived. And we are living in the days between, the final days of the Aseret Y’mei Teshuvah, the Ten Days of Return. I hope you have found at least one moment during these days to reflect on the year that has passed and the year you want to create. And if you haven’t, there is still time. That is the gift of Shabbat Shuvah: one more opportunity to slow down before Yom Kippur begins on Sunday evening..."

"Haazinu is the perfect Torah portion for this shabbat as it begins with a simple request: Listen. Before all the words of Yom Kippur - the confessions, prayers, promises, and melodies - can we make room to listen to one another and to ourselves? To what this past year has taught us and to what we hope might be different in the year ahead? May this Shabbat Shuvah help us prepare for the work ahead."

And may the work of returning bring us all to peace. Shabbat Shalom.

Annual Sisterhood Rosh Hashanah Sweets Reception

Shanah tovah! Our Rosh Hashanah Sweets Reception was a delightful addition to the High Holidays at Congregation Beth Israel. Thank you to everyone who contributed treats, helped plate the goodies, or donated funds. You created a sweet start to the New Year for our congregation.

We are especially grateful to Karla Levy and Joan Silverman for leading this project, and we also want to thank the facilities staff for their assistance. We couldn't have done it without you. Well done, everyone! Todah rabah!

SO …WHAT IS SISTERHOOD?

We’re so glad you asked. WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood is a community of women who come together to connect, celebrate, learn, laugh, support one another, and create Jewish community.

And here's the best part: there is no “type” of Sisterhood woman. We’re women of all ages and stages of life. Some are single. Some are partnered or married. Some have little kids. Some have grown kids. Some have no kids. Some have been CBI members forever. Some are just finding their way in. We have different stories, different interests, different schedules - and probably very different opinions about the best way to make a brisket.

What we share is a love of being Jewish, a love of community, and a desire to be connected. At its heart, Sisterhood is about friendship. It’s finding someone to sit with at an event. Someone to call when you need a little encouragement. Someone to laugh with. Someone who gets why Jewish life can feel both deeply meaningful and wonderfully ridiculous. We’re building community - and having fun while we’re at it.

WHY SHOULD I JOIN?

We are STRONGER TOGETHER. The Sisterhood at CBI is more than just a membership organization. We are a group dedicated to the three pillars of the Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ): Spirituality, Sisterhood, and Social Action. Every member helps us make a difference at CBI, in Portland, and in the world. We are proud to be a part of WRJ (with over 100,000 members worldwide) and our Pacific District (13 western states and two Canadian provinces).

You can make a difference. Your membership supports our projects, strengthens the voice of women worldwide, and empowers them to create caring communities, nurture congregations, cultivate personal and spiritual growth, and advocate for and promote progressive Jewish values. We have been speaking out for over 100 years and have made a substantial difference in everything we touch, including Pay Equity, Civil Rights, Racial Justice and DEI, Immigration and Refugee Rights, Women’s Rights, and Environmental and Climate Change.

Our membership year is July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, so now is the time to join or renew your membership. Without you, WE ARE ONE WOMAN SHORT!
