Up to 200,000 Oregonians could lose healthcare due to coming Medicaid changes. For many, it’s still hard to visualize what the impact of these changes will be.

Join our Call to Action to make the need visible. We’re creating a line of 200+ people to show what overwhelmed waiting lists really look like, and how many people they affect.

Our waitlist for counseling has already been growing, mostly because high cost of living, inflation, and cuts to SNAP benefits are driving Portlanders to find affordable counseling options. We anticipate Medicaid changes to create even more need.

Where Are They Now? 💙

From a Counseling Intern at William Temple House in 2015 to founder, supervisor, and therapist today, Ry Brown has spent the last decade helping others find hope and connection through counseling.

"WTH was such an important place and community for me. The training, mentorship, and values I encountered there continue to shape the work I do today. WTH gave me the space to discover who I am as a therapist.”

After founding Live True Counseling, today Ry provides therapy through The Center for Being Human in Portland, carrying forward the compassion, curiosity, and values they developed at William Temple House.

Every year, William Temple House trains around two dozen counseling interns who help make mental health care more accessible across Portland, during their time at WTH and long after.

We’re proud to have been part of Ry’s journey. 💙

This is the story that brings many clients to William Temple House for low-cost counseling. In fact, we estimate a third of the people we see have insurance that’s either insufficient or too expensive.

Last year, over 300 people received counseling for grief, depression, anxiety and more at William Temple House, for an average of $4.11 a session. Your gifts and support are what power this access.

We’re taking a temporary pause during the month of October to redesign & strengthen our Food Pantry program and plan for its future.

We know this pause may be difficult for community members who rely on our pantry services and for whom food support is essential. We did not make this decision lightly.

With food resources shrinking and costs rising, we’re making changes now to ensure we can continue serving our community for years to come.

This doesn't mean our pantry is going away. We remain committed to serving our community with food, counseling, and connection, and we’ll be sharing a re-opening date and more information in early November on our website and social media.

For the time being, we’ve notified our pantry community and partners of this temporary pause. If you need food assistance during this time, visit foodfinder.oregonfoodbank.org to locate other food resources.

In NW Portland specifically, additional food resources include:
Lift Urban Portland
Trinity Cathedral
Sunshine Division

We thank you for your understanding and support. ❤️

At the end of September, we're saying goodbye to two beloved members of our team: Kevin Ryan, Director of Social Services, and Blu Christensen, Social Services Coordinator. 💙

Kevin began as a volunteer in 2015 and went on to lead our food pantry through tremendous growth and the challenges of the pandemic, always centering the dignity of the people we serve and creating a sense of genuine belonging. Blu joined us through Jesuit Volunteer Corps and quickly became an invaluable team member, known for his dedication to equity, steady presence, and humor.

Thank you, Kevin and Blu, for the legacy of care, compassion, and community you have created at William Temple House ❤️

Please help us shout out these two incredible human beings in the comments!

We celebrated 60 years, and seeded another 60, at our recent August Anniversary event. Thank you to everyone who joined to make it a meaningful and vibrant night. Together, we reaffirmed that Portland needs places where everyone can access support, dignity, and belonging. This event was powered by the people that have powered William Temple House, as you'll see in these photos.

It’s Hunger Action Month - and every action you take can make a meaningful difference for your fellow Portlanders.

Visits to food pantries in Oregon hit an all-time record this past year, according to Oregon Food Bank. We are serving record people this year, up to 179 people a day.

What can you do this September to take action against growing hunger? Lots! We have four impactful ideas.

1) Volunteer in your local pantry. By simply giving your time and talents, you can make a direct impact on your community. An added bonus is you join a community of like-minded people when you volunteer.

2) Make a monetary donation to a pantry this month. Pantries like ours stretch your dollar far and source exactly the food we need for the communities we serve.

3) Donate the extra food in your pantry to a food pantry. Contact your local pantry and see if they can take the items in the back of your pantry!

4) Use your voice to spread the word about all the good being done in Portland. There’s no shortage of bad news. But there’s also so much GOOD going on in our city that we can shout from the rooftops. It makes a difference.

Last year, over 7,000 Portlanders shopped for exactly the groceries they need at William Temple House. Join our impact!
