Food banks across the country are facing rising need and fewer federal food resources — and the consequences are showing up in our communities.

In a new report from NBC News, food banks across 35 states describe the growing challenges of meeting the need for food assistance.

Thank you to NBC News for bringing attention to what food banks and communities across the country are experiencing.

At Oregon Food Bank, we’ve lost about 3.5 million pounds of USDA food compared with last year, while visits are at record highs. Our president, Andrea Williams, shared the heartbreaking reality facing local pantries: sometimes, there isn’t enough protein for an older adult to get through the week.

In North Carolina, Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina reports that its partners are seeing up to 60% more visits than last year while receiving about 37% less in USDA food donations.

These experiences show that this is not an isolated challenge. Food banks across the country are working to meet growing needs with fewer resources.

Food banks help people access food, but charitable food assistance alone cannot end hunger. We need policies that protect access to food and address the root causes of hunger.

Hunger is a policy choice, not a personal failure. Ending hunger takes all of us. 💚

Thank you to NBC News for reporting on the challenges facing food banks and communities across the country.

We’re proud to recognize NatureKist Fruit Company as Oregon Food Bank’s October 2026 Community Cultivator! 🍐

NatureKist is a multigenerational Taiwanese-owned family farm in Hood River, Oregon, and the only Taiwanese-owned farm in the Gorge. Three years ago, this second-generation family farm began donating all of their excess fruit to Columbia Gorge Food Bank and Oregon Food Bank.

“We like donating our Asian pears rather than throwing them away because it’s something that people don’t usually see or have access to.” — Kevin Wang, owner of NatureKist Fruit Company

It’s easy to leave excess fruit on the trees, but NatureKist chooses to harvest pears not for profit, but for their community. In 2024, they donated more than 100,000 pounds of fruit, and in 2025, they doubled that amount. 🍐

As Kevin says, “Everybody’s just working hard to raise their families, and that’s the resilience I see in the community.”

Thank you, NatureKist Fruit Company, for sharing the abundance of your harvest with our neighbors and helping cultivate a stronger, more resilient Oregon. We can’t wait to see what 2026 brings!

🌿 Food banking is about more than food. It’s about how we work together.

From coordinating volunteers to building community partnerships, food banking depends on people working toward a shared goal. And wherever people work together, conflict can arise.

Learning how to navigate conflict with curiosity, care and accountability can help us build trust, strengthen relationships and work through challenges together.

Join us for one of two Conflict Transformation offerings this October. Whether you’re a food bank leader, staff member, volunteer or community partner, these sessions offer space to reflect on your own conflict habits and practice new ways of navigating disagreement.

🌱 Beginner Track: An Introduction to Conflict Transformation
📅 Thursday, October 15 | 9 a.m.–1 p.m. PT
Explore the 5 Gifts of Conflict and reflect on how we respond to tension and disagreement.

🌻 Intermediate Track: Conflict Transformation Cohort
📅 Thursdays, October 22 & 29 | 9 a.m.–1 p.m. PT
Go deeper into conflict patterns, trust and how an “us vs. them” mindset can shape our relationships.

Stronger relationships help us do this work together. 💚
