The special guests kept coming to Soul of the City! 🙌🏾

We were honored to welcome SEI alumna Sekai Abeni. She graduated from The Juilliard School with a BFA in Acting. She’s built a remarkable career as an actress across film, television, and stage. You may recognize her as a series regular on Paper Girls, starring alongside Ali Wong, or from the feature film The Long Game with Oscar-nominated actors Kathleen Turner and Jackie Earl Haley, which earned her a Rising Star from Essence Magazine and Best Actress at the 2025 Harlem Film Festival. Beyond acting, Sekai is a visionary Director and Creative Producer whose work spans global brands such as Gatorade, Greg Yuna, and NPR's Tiny Desk.

We are incredibly proud to see Sekai continue to shine and represent Portland and the SEI community so well. 🤎✨

Our special Soul of the City guest of the night, Bosko Kante, is an SEI alumnus, Grammy-winning producer, mechanical engineer, and tech entrepreneur whose work bridges music, innovation, and community impact ✨

Bosko gave a stunning performance on the ElectroSpit and shared the mission behind HiiiWAV, the nonprofit Black music incubator he founded through MESA USA in 2020. Through mentorship, training, and expanded access to technology, HiiiWAV creates opportunities for Black artists and entrepreneurs to thrive creatively and professionally! 🎙️🎶

🎓 Senior Sunday 🎓

This Sunday, we celebrate SEI senior and Roosevelt High School’s Rose Festival Princess Jasmin Reyes Contreras. 👑

Jasmin’s journey has been one of resilience, leadership, and excellence. She has overcome significant challenges, all while continuing to excel academically and remain deeply engaged in her school and community. She was awarded the Stand for Children “Beat the Odds” Scholarship, recognizing her perseverance and academic achievement through adversity, and she has also been accepted to multiple universities, including Ivy League institutions. Her story highlights her commitment to education, her leadership as Rose Festival Princess, and her dedication to creating a brighter future for herself and her community.

We are so proud to celebrate her this Senior Sunday, especially her coordinator, Mr. Tyler! We are excited to see her shine at Barnard College in the fall! 🌟✨

Our talented Makerspace Coordinator, Ms. Chai, designed a custom prom suit for an SEI student to perfectly complement their date’s dress ✨👔🧵

Through her fashion and design classes in After School Programming, Ms. Chai has built meaningful relationships with students that extend beyond the classroom and into their most important milestones. We’re grateful for the care, creativity, and support she brings in helping students feel confident and celebrated on their big days 💚

Some of you may know our Director of Advocacy & Engagement, Sahaan McKelvey, as SEI’s Timb connoisseur 🥾 — but he’s also boots-on-the-ground advocating for our students and families every day. Last week, Sahaan joined local school districts and education providers at La Plaza Esperanza in advocacy against devastating cuts to summer funding in East County.

Here’s what happened ⬇️
In 2025, Oregon approved $35 million annually for summer programming to support kids across the state. Based on demonstrated need, Reynolds School District received $1 million and Parkrose received $415K.

But as of April 2026, Reynolds, Parkrose, and Gresham-Barlow were awarded ZERO dollars for summer programming for Summers 2026–2028 — despite the need remaining the same.

Now, for the next three years, a majority of East Multnomah County students will have little access to summer learning opportunities, impacting some of Oregon’s most underserved schools and communities.

This matters deeply because Reynolds and Parkrose serve some of the highest percentages of Black students in Oregon.

These cuts also directly impact SEI’s ability to support Black and Brown students through Freedom School and other critical summer programs. Without this funding, summer programming becomes significantly more expensive and may impact where services can be offered, creating additional barriers to transportation, access, and safe learning spaces for our youth and families.

Our students deserve continued investment — not disinvestment.

SEI remains committed to showing up for East County students and families alongside our district partners, but we cannot do it alone.

📢 We urge our community to contact State Representatives, Senators, the Oregon Department of Education, and the Governor’s Office to advocate for emergency education funding so East County students do not lose access to summer programming over the next three years.
