We are still deploying people to the East Coast, but there are very few Service Associate Openings. Nonetheless, Oregon DSHR members should make sure to keep their availability current. Either use DSHR Self-serve or email your DSHR Admin.

Tropical Storm Isaac is now in the gulf approaching Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. There are current openings for national deployment. Current Oregon Region DSHR members should update their availability with their chapter.

You may be wondering what is going on with the severe weather events this weekend. There are two active DRs: one in Oklahoma and one in Iowa, but no open requests for our DSHR Territory. Nonetheless, this is a good time to check/confirm your availability for deployment.

The Health Status Record Annual Update requirement has been discontinued effectively immediately. However, it is still required for new applicants and when a member's health status changes. Also, the Pre-Assignment Health Questionnaire is still required prior to assignment to a relief operation. Members with an active CrossNet account can find the complete announcement at this link.

We are watching the tornado activity in the midwest. There are currently no national openings. Nonetheless we should get ahead of the curve. Please enter your availability and make sure your Health Status Record is up to date. If you are uncomfortable with DSHR Self-Serve or cannot remember how to log in, please email your availability to your local DSHR Administrator. (for OTC, send to [email protected].)

We have deployed five people to the east coast and are continuing to monitor the various DRs. There are openings but we have had limited matches for available volunteers. We will continue to watch for opportunities.

We are watching to see what post-landfall DSHR needs will be so please stay tuned. In the meantime, check out this link to info about possible Irene response opportunities. This info was sent out as an email message to OTC volunteers but may be helpful to other Red Cross Oregon Region volunteers looking for information about qualifying for national deployment.

Hurricane Irene is targeting the east coast. We are expecting substantial requests for volunteers. Please email your chapter DSHR Administrator with your availability or use DSHR Self-Serve if you have mastered that option. Note that all hardship codes except Extreme Cold are in effect for all Irene-related DRs.

OTC's two volunteers deployed to Minot are returning this weekend. Feedback we have received reinforces Jan's comments below: Hardship Codes are meaningful and should be taken seriously. Hearing about the difficult conditions experienced by our volunteers provides a good reminder of what the people of Minot are going through every day. Thanks to all the volunteers who have participated in this disaster response.

The Red Cross still has a presence in Minot, North Dakota, as many residents are still unable to retulrn to their homes. An OTC Nurse is flying out today (Friday) for a three week deployment, to replace DSHR staff returning home. There may be requests for Mass Care workers sometime soon as well. If you are qualified, available, and interested in a 3 week deployment, notify you chapter of your current availability.

National DSHR Leadership has announced changes in the duration of deployment commitment required of DSHR volunteers. Longer commitments encouraged as well as increased flexibility for shorter periods--all depends on the needs of the operation. See link below--CrossNet required.
