Today is Ada Lovelace Day, a global celebration of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Ada Lovelace wrote what is considered the world's first computer program in the 1840s, long before computers as we know them existed. She is proof that vision and curiosity have no ceiling.

At STEM Coding Lab, we see that same curiosity every day in the girls and young women we serve across Allegheny County.

Representation changes what young people believe is possible for them. That is why it matters, and why we celebrate today.

It's World Space Week! Space exploration does not happen without computer science. The software that guides spacecraft, the data we gather from distant planets, and the AI systems that help scientists make sense of it all rest on the skills we teach K–8 students every day.

When a student writes their first line of code or programs a robot to navigate a course, they build the foundation for their future careers. Aerospace engineer. Mission software developer. Data scientist. The sky is not the limit. It is just the beginning.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we are celebrating Latino and Hispanic educators and experts.

Representation in STEM matters. Ellen Ochoa became the first Latina astronaut to travel to space, logging nearly 1,000 hours in orbit. Mario Molina became the first Mexican-born scientist to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, with research that helped protect our planet's atmosphere.

Building a future where every child has access to CS, AI, and STEM education means building one that reflects everyone. When young people see themselves reflected in the field, they are more likely to believe they belong in it.

Last week, we brought together corporate leaders, educators, and community advocates for the Pittsburgh Future Workforce Summit to discuss what it will take to ensure Pittsburgh's youth have the skills, access, and opportunities to become our region's future workforce. The conversation was honest, energizing, and full of commitment.

Thank you to our panelists for their candor and insight: PA State Representative Lindsey Powell, Steve Wray from the City of Pittsburgh, K. Chase Patterson from Urban Academy, Amber Deemer from Citizens Bank, and Matt Healy from Google. The day is finally here! Tonight, Pittsburgh's top corporations and community leaders will come together for one conversation: how do we prepare the next generation for the future workforce?

The Pittsburgh Future Workforce Summit is tonight from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at Bakery Square. It will be an evening of cocktails and conversation with the leaders of top corporations and Pennsylvania constituents. Together, we will discuss why K-8 CS, AI, and STEM education is critical to the future of our workforce and our region.

This summer, SCL brought coding, robotics, and AI learning directly to students who might not otherwise have had the chance. Our summer camps at Pitt CEC in the Hill District gave students a chance to build robotics, coding, and problem-solving skills. A week of STEM education can do a lot for a young mind.
