We couldn't be more excited for our next Tour & Explore!

The incredible Oh My Cod Vegan Seafood Co. is coming up from Florida with a very special menu for us! As an all-vegan seafood vendor, they serve a delicious and unique menu all throughout the East Coast. We’re thrilled to be hosting them, and their focus on plant-based seafood has inspired us to shine a spotlight on individuals who are too often ignored: underwater animals! We’ll have a station dedicated to the incredible fish, mammals, invertebrates, and reptiles who live in our oceans and seas, and we’ll be inviting guests to learn eye-opening facts about these animals and the ways they’re affected by aquaculture and the fishing industry. Rounding it out is the return of Dee’s Kitchen, a Refuge-Favorite that will be bringing the perfect sweet treats to complement Oh My Cod’s classic seaside favorites!

This is all in addition to our usual self-guided tour, where you can meet and learn about rescued goats, sheep, ducks, geese, chickens, turkeys, and cows.

It's not QUITE that time of year yet, but we honestly can't wait for our upcoming Benefit for the Animals!!! 🎊

We already have a date (Nov. 14) and a location (The Hibiscus in Raleigh), but what we're really excited about is our special guest speaker: the legendary photojournalist and animal rights activist, Jo-Anne McArthur! Jo-Anne visited us last year and took some incredible photos of our residents, and we're beyond honored that she'll be speaking at our Benefit 🙌

Tickets and more information are coming soon! For now, save the date and clear your calendars--you don't want to miss this 📅

We're so happy we don't have to keep this a secret anymore...

On Saturday, October 10, we'll be hosting a 5K Trail Run here at our Refuge to raise money for The Pig Project!!! These funds go directly towards building infrastructure so that we can provide rescued pigs with a forever home. The officially-timed race will take you down scenic paths winding through the natural beauty of our sanctuary; better yet, part of the loop will take you down our newly constructed Pig Access Roads that lead to our future Pig Habitat 🏃‍♀️

Not a runner? Don't worry! Immediately following the 5k, there will be a family-friendly "Fun Run" during which you can travel at your own pace to the Pig Habitat while learning about our vision for the new pig homes from a tour guide!

With fun swag for race participants and delicious food and drink vendors open to all attendees, this is an exciting way for you to help make Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge a home for pigs in NC and beyond 🐖

Early-Bird Registrations at $30 per person are open now, but they'll close on August 1! Learn more about the race (plus how to become a sponsor 👀) and register now by clicking the link below:

This week, we performed Chicken Health Checks with the help of our summer interns: Ally, Jayden, and Kevin! It was great to have their assistance as we went through the health checks, which included:

👀 Checking the eyes, ears, and mouths of the chickens
🪶 Trimming the rear feathers for residents who needed it
👣 Examining their feet and rewrapped them
💞 Feeling their keel bones to check their weight
➕ And more!

We love spending time with our chicken residents and giving them the care they deserve, and we can't wait to do more work with our awesome interns!

If you’ve ever been to one of our Tour and Explores, you know how incredible our volunteer Tour Guides are! To become a Tour Guide, you don’t have to have a background in education or animal care. You just need to enjoy spending time with people and be committed to advocating for farm animals! Our Tour Guides are trained to identify the individuals who live at the Refuge, including turkeys, cows, chickens, ducks, geese, sheep, and goats. Guides are also supported and given the skills to speak compassionately about the quirks and happy lives of our residents at the Refuge as well as the difficult circumstances many of them faced in animal agriculture.

After you train on one species, you get to be the person who shares this knowledge with tour guests and introduces visitors to our residents and mission. If you want to become part of something really, really special, apply to become a tour guide by completing a short application on our website’s Volunteer page. If you have any questions, you can email Kate at [email protected]–she'd love to hear from you!
