Happy World Environment Day! Heritage breeds are part of a more sustainable future. Many are naturally adapted to their environments, require fewer inputs, and help maintain healthy, balanced ecosystems. Conserving these breeds helps protect both agriculture and the land they depend on.

Did you know every domesticated cow we see today traces its roots back to wild aurochs? These massive ancestral creatures once roamed Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Almost 10,500 years ago, these creatures were domesticated in the Near East, making them among the oldest managed livestock species and laying the foundation for the diverse breeds we know today.

The last known wild auroch died in 1627. Its legacy lives on today in all domesticated cattle, shaped by thousands of years of partnership with people in many countries.

Meet the Dales Pony!
This hardy heritage breed is known for its strength, stamina and versatility. Once used as pack ponies in the rugged hills of northern England, they remain a dependable working partner today. Dales Ponies excel in driving, endurance and trekking, and are strong enough to comfortably carry an adult rider. Listed as Critical on the Conservation Priority List, they need our help to survive: www.livestockconservancy.org/dales-pony/

Never underestimate what a good mamma hen is capable of defending her nest! It's the 2nd copperhead that this O Shamo hen has killed according to her breeder, Rhiannon Barreda. The breed is a fierce protector of their eggs and offspring and not to be messed with (if you happened to be a snake!)

Q: What makes the Ossabaw Island hog so unusual?

A: Ossabaw Island hogs descend from pigs left on a Georgia island by Spanish explorers in the 1500s. After centuries of isolation, they developed the ability to store large amounts of fat to survive lean seasons. Scientists study them because their metabolism resembles Type 2 diabetes in humans. Listed as Critical on the Conservation Priority List, they need our help to survive. Learn more: https://livestockconservancy.org/ossabaw-island-hog/
