Pretty good to be sandwiched between Bill Monroe and Michael Cleveland! Tracks from Alex's album continue to be played on Back Porch Music nearly every weekend. Check out the album on Spotify, Apple Music, or Youtube. It's some good music!

Alexander Meredith was one of the teachers with the Shakori Hills JAM program, which was a wonderful introduction to bluegrass and old time music for young aspiring musicians and was the way Alex himself came to discover the joys of the mandolin. We are sad that Covid brought the program to an end, but we hope that everyone who was part of it is still playing music. Alex has now released a debut album of twelve of his original tunes. I hope that some of his former students will listen to this and be inspired to continue their own musical journey. The rest of us can sit back and enjoy!

Every year, our Junior Appalachian Musicians play at Shakori Hills Grass Roots festival and it is a wonderful experience for them to be able to play on stage, even if they are only beginners. Our teachers back them up and we also bring in a caller for a dance at the end of the hour, which is always enjoyed by everyone, no matter how young! Tickets to the festival are FREE for our JAM families and this is just one of the benefits of becoming a Junior Appalachian Musician :) If you or someone you know is interested in learning to play an instrument in an informal jam setting (without any requirement to read music), it's not too late to join us. We now have a good core of budding musicians but we need some new faces so that we can keep the beginner classes going. Spread the word or join up now - either message us or go to the signing up page. We have just started our new session and you won't find a more affordable or more fun way to learn music. See you next Thursday at the Peppercorn in downtown Siler City!

Learn to play an instrument

Even if you think you aren’t musical, you never know what hidden talent you might have. You don’t need to read music, you will be able to learn at your own pace and you may just find the perfect instrument for you! Even if you don’t want to play an instrument, you can always try the dance class or come for the singing - it’s all a lot of fun! Small groups learn together and make progress fast, so that after just a few months of lessons we were able to all perform together at the Fall Shakori Hills Grass Roots Festival. This year we will be performing at May’s Grass Roots Festival and everyone can participate if they want, even if they’re a beginner and can only strum a few chords. This is a perfect way to discover music and learn new skills. We can promise you that once you learn to play an instrument, it is something that will bring you joy and new friendships that will enrich your whole life.
