Carolina Tiger Rescue GFAS-accredited wild cat sanctuary working to save and protect wild cats in captivity and in the wild
(2946)

Carolina Tiger Rescue not only provides a forever home for exotic animals in need, we educate the public on how every day we can make a difference for wild cats in captivity and in the wild. We fight for the day when these beautiful creatures are no longer exploited by humans.

Contrary to popular belief, porcupines cannot shoot their quills. If Fabio felt threatened, he would simply back up into a predator. The barbs on his quills would then stick into the threat. Because quills are just modified hairs, they do grow more after they lose them.

As fall settles in, Sultan Tiger seems right at home in the cooler weather! 🍂🐅

While tigers are often associated with the warm forests and grasslands of Asia, Siberian tigers (also known as Amur tigers) inhabit the Russian Far East, where winters are long and temperatures can drop well below freezing. Their thick fur and dense coats of fur between their paw pads help them withstand these cold conditions.

We see many of our tigers become more active as temperatures drop, taking advantage of the cooler weather to explore their habitats and engage with their surroundings. For these big cats, a crisp fall day can be a welcome change from the summer heat!

🐆 is brought to you by Beau Cougar!

Beau tends to be shy about playing with his boomer ball when people are around, so catching him in action is a rare treat! We often hear him batting it around in his habitat throughout the day, even when we can’t see him. Boomer balls are one way we provide enrichment, encouraging our rescued residents to interact with their surroundings and stay engaged.

Keeping up with daily animal care takes plenty of supplies, too. Here’s what our team could use this week:

🖊️ Ultra-Fine Permanent Markers: We use these to label vials and medications. They’re a must-have for our animal care team!

🔪 Paring Knives: Our food prep area needs more knives to help staff prepare the meals our rescued residents receive each day.

🪵 Wooden Dowels: Keepers use these every day to safely offer treats and medications. They’re an important tool in our daily care routines, so we need to keep a good supply on hand.

🔋 Battery Chargers: A new charger will help keep our electric mower ready to go, allowing our site team to maintain areas near nervous animals without the added noise of a gas-powered mower.

Every item donated helps our team provide thoughtful, consistent care for our rescued residents and keep the sanctuary running smoothly. ❤️

Tulip Coati buries some donated cilantro in her tail to save the scent for later🥬

While humans prefer their produce non-bruised, animals love them just the same. We work with a few local grocery stores to collect donated excess produce that isn’t quite as beautiful as the rest.

We get lots of fun produce such as cilantro donated from these partnerships! While some residents will eat herbs, it primarily provides an excellent enrichment source.

Happy 16th birthday to Saber Tiger!

Thanks to his goofy personality, Saber has been a favorite of tour guests for a long time. His story of exploitation is also one that sticks with people. While we hope to see a future where there is no more inbreeding to create white tigers, we’re glad we got to meet Saber. Be sure to wish him a happy birthday! 🎉

🐅 India Tiger is getting in a good stretch! Did you know a tiger’s stripes are as unique as human fingerprints? No two tigers have exactly the same stripe pattern, and even their skin is striped beneath their fur!

India is one of the most recognizable tigers at the sanctuary, thanks in part to her distinct facial markings. Those unique stripes help make her unmistakably India! 🌿

Willow Bobcat enjoys a quiet afternoon, but trap camera footage lets us know that she’s really active at night. Bobcats are North Carolina’s only native species of wildcat, and they are important for controlling populations of smaller animals like squirrels and rabbits. Willow retains those instincts and will try to catch wildlife that wanders too close to her enclosure.

Cher, like many servals, started her life being exploited by the pet trade. Breeders will sell servals and Savannahs - a cross between a serval and a domestic cat - for thousands of dollars. These cats, however, are wild and not suited to a life inside a house. They have more complex needs and behaviors than a domestic cat and don’t make good pets.
