💛 Building Connections, Making a Difference! 💛

We are so grateful to be building a connection with the Arizona Burn Foundation! Their close proximity to Editha House makes this relationship especially meaningful, and we truly appreciate the referrals we have received and the trust placed in us to support their patients and families during challenging times.

We had the pleasure of meeting Krystal from Arizona Burn Foundation and she was absolutely lovely! It’s connections like these that remind us how important it is to come together as a community to provide comfort, support, and a home away from home for those who need it most.

We are thankful not only for the partnerships we are building, but also for the new friendships we’ve made along the way and all the ones still to come. Here’s to continuing to grow, support one another, and make a difference together! 🏡💛

❤️ Al’s Story: Hope, Perseverance & the Gift of Life

When retired Police Captain Al Casciato arrived at Editha House on February 23, 2026, he had already been through more than most of us could imagine.

He had been in palliative care in California and was told he might not make it to Christmas. After being turned down by multiple hospitals, Al continued searching for an opportunity and eventually came to Arizona for evaluation.

By March 1, he was officially on the transplant list. His journey included 8 “dry runs”—times when a potential transplant seemed possible, only for it not to happen. At one point, he required 15 liters of oxygen, and his ears and fingers were turning blue.

Then, on May 14, the call finally came.

Al received a double lung transplant. The surgery lasted eight hours. The donor lungs were described as “pristine,” but there was an unexpected challenge: the new lungs were too large for his chest. His chest had to remain open for five days while his body adjusted and the lungs had time to settle.

During his long wait, Al had meaningful conversations with close friends. One friend in particular, a fellow police officer from the same department, encouraged him with words that stayed with him:

“Be the perfect patient.”

Al believes keeping those words in the back of his mind helped him through the difficult days.
As I spoke with Al, he stated “I always thought I’d be a donor.”

Today, Al is living a story he once could only hope for—a story of perseverance, friendship, and the incredible gift of life through organ donation.

We are so honored that Al’s journey brought him to Editha House. With over 200 nights and counting, are so grateful we are able to be a small part of his story. ❤️

❤️ September 11 — Honoring a True Hero

Today, we have the incredible honor of having a true hero staying at Editha House.

He spent years serving as a New York City Police Sergeant. Just six days before September 11, 2001, he was transferred to the precinct in Manhattan close to the towers. On the morning of 9/11, he reported for a 6:00am shift—and that shift would not truly end for days upon days.

The stories he has shared about that time are difficult to put into words. His courage, dedication, and the things he witnessed are a powerful reminder of the incredible sacrifices made by so many first responders that day.

Over the years, Editha House has had the privilege of welcoming many first responders, firefighters, police officers, caregivers, and families who have found themselves here while their loved ones receive care.

But today feels especially meaningful. Today, having him here feels especially significant.

A man who once spent his life protecting and serving others is now here, quietly serving in another way—caring for the woman he loves.

We are honored to provide him a place to stay while he stands beside his wife during her journey. And today, we hold a little extra space in our hearts for him, knowing that September 11 carries memories and emotions that will never truly fade.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

From one kind of service to another, we are honored to have you here with us. ❤️
