03/02/2025

July 2023: A huge moment for all of us! The Medical Clinic, now officially designated as the Polyclinic, was recognized by the Department of Public Health as a Certified Health Clinic in the province of Puerto Plata! This certification ensured that there will always be a doctor living and working in Angostura. Additionally, federal funding and medication will be provided on a regular basis to ensure healthcare is easily accessible in the community.

Our team is now turning its attention to ambulatory services to ensure community members can travel outside of Angostura when urgent care is needed.

02/26/2025

January 2020: After raising $28,000 for two American staff members to live in the Dominican, they were off! Their goal was to oversee the completion of the Medical Clinic and develop even deeper relationships with the folks living in Angostura. Over the next several weeks, they met with community leaders, healthcare professionals, and government officials to talk about the plans to complete the clinic. They taught our stateside staff about nonprofit certifications and government assistance for license polyclinics in the region. Pharmacy technicians were trained to begin supporting the clinic! There was a ton of momentum!

Unfortunately, COVID-19 restrictions took over, and our staff members were forced to return home. Though their time was cut short, they laid the groundwork for the eventual completion of the Medical Clinic. Angostura and two new partner organizations, Cáritas & Food for the Poor, collaborated with us virtually to complete construction on the clinic.

02/22/2025

February 2018: If we were going to build a clinic with Angostura, we needed to do some research! We traveled to the Dominican Republic several times throughout 2018 to learn more about the Dominican Republic Healthcare System. We visited hospitals, pharmacies, and acute care facilities. We interviewed doctors and nurses to get a sense of their biggest struggles with patient care.

During these meetings, it became evident we’d need a larger on-the-ground presence to help oversee the construction of a Medical Clinic. We launched a project plan to hire and train full-time American staff members to live and work in Angostura daily.

02/17/2025

March 2017: We hosted our first event at Seventh Son Brewing in Columbus, OH! This event was the first time we had ever spoken about ondawave on a large scale. The primary goal was to give ondawave supporters a peek into our organization and talk about our vision of completing a Medical Clinic in Angostura. After this event, we hosted several additional Fundraising & Awareness events throughout 2017. It was a big year for telling our story!

02/13/2025

October 2016: One of the first projects we completed was the Segunda Peña, or the Community Center. Angostura had fundraised to start this building in exchange for votes from a local politician. Unfortunately, the politician did not keep his promise so the building remained just a foundation and a few cinder blocks for years. Together, ondawave’s donors helped to fundraise to complete it! This dual-purpose building serves as a hub for community meetings, town halls, and fun events. Our team also uses it as a base when we visit Angostura!
