American Friends Service Committee

American Friends Service Committee AFSC promotes a world free of violence, inequality, and oppression.

Founded in 1917, the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a Quaker organization that promotes lasting peace with justice, as a practical expression of faith in action. Drawing on continuing spiritual insights and working with people of many backgrounds, we nurture the seeds of change and respect for human life that transform social relations and systems.

The labor and hunger strike at Delaney Hall spotlight the inhuman conditions at the GEO Group run ICE prison.

AFSC's Jenny Garcia says that sometimes GEO Group will “pay” a worker with a soda. Nor are provided the proper tools to work, having to buy supplies from the commissary.

Immigrants held at GEO Group’s Delaney Hall in Newark are on a labor strike and a hunger strike, refusing to perform the jobs that keep the place running.

In New Jersey, immigrants in detention are organizing for their freedom. Earlier this month, nearly 300 people detained at Delaney Hall signed an open letter describing torture and inhumane conditions at the facility. https://bit.ly/3PmhNnY

It's appears to be an escalation of detainees' efforts to organize at a facility where an uprising last year resulted in multiple escapes.

Last month, the House passed the 2026 Farm Bill. But the version passed by House Republicans makes permanent $187 billion in SNAP cuts. Join us in urging your senator: Pass a Farm Bill that reduces hunger and works for all people and the planet! https://bit.ly/4wAI16K

Right now, Congress is negotiating the 2026 Farm Bill. This is an opportunity that comes once every five years to determine what food is grown, how it’s grown, and who can afford it. With over $1 trillion in spending, the Farm Bill funds SNAP (formerly food stamps) and other vital nutrition progra...

Yesterday, two teenage gunmen shot and killed Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nader Awad at the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD). The victims were caring and courageous individuals who were deeply committed to their families, their community, and the ICSD. We mourn their deaths and hold their families and loved ones in the Light.

This violence does not occur in a vacuum. Islamophobic and racist rhetoric and policies are coming directly from the U.S. government and amplified by media outlets and commentators. We must use every available avenue to stop Islamophobia and build a world where people can live and worship in peace.

ICSD is more than just a mosque; the center also houses a school and is hub for community organizing and events. AFSC’s U.S.-Mexico Border Program has worked with ICSD for years, partnering with us on immigrant rights work, sharing their meeting spaces, and hosting AFSC speakers. This evening we will join them, along with CAIR, Muslim Leadership Council, and many others, for an interfaith vigil for the victims and families. Everyone in the San Diego area is welcome: Lindbergh Neighborhood Park at 6:30.
