A highlight from this year’s Shout Out was Lisa Yau’s 5th grade students at Francis Scott Key School who investigated grief and loss, a subject close to their hearts. Students reflected on their own grieving journeys, how they’re helping fellow students, and the tools they’ve learned for healing. Watch the video for a powerful excerpt of their presentation.

On June 3rd, middle school students in Ms. Cantarini’s classes at C.W. Henry held a rally against redlining and gun violence, and for food and housing security. Local politicians, artists, civic leaders and community members including and came out to join the rally and stand up for justice. Students created this civic action as part of their year long work with Need in Deed.

As part of a program evaluation course at the Fels Institute of Government at Penn, students conducted a small evaluation of Need in Deed. Through interviews with teachers, they found that Need in Deed’s unique strength lies in turning classrooms into innovation labs that elevate student voice, choice, and agency.
