Imagine if this country placed as much emphasis and investment in Early Childhood Education as we do in Higher Education. Picture some of the greatest minds at our universities dedicating their time and expertise to the critical years of 0 to 4, instead of focusing primarily on ages 18 to 22. The impact on our country could be profound. In nearly every other sector—whether building a structure, starting a business, training an athlete, or planting a garden—we understand the importance of laying a strong foundation. We invest heavily at the beginning because we know that future success depends on it.

In agriculture, for example, the initial steps of selecting the right seeds, preparing the soil, and providing proper care are essential for healthy growth. Neglecting these early stages leads to weak crops, reduced yields, and long-term damage, making it nearly impossible to achieve a successful harvest.

So why, when it comes to human life, don’t we apply the same principle? Why don’t we view the first four years of a child’s life as the most critical? Poor early practices in child development, just like in any other field, lead to long-term issues that make it harder to build a thriving society.

When we look at the biggest issues facing this country, such as the economy, gun control, violent crime, and racial and ethnic inequality—many of these could be more effectively addressed with a stronger focus on Early Childhood Education. It's the long game. And as with most important things, there’s no quick and easy fix. We have to change our approach.

We’ve been so focused on "day care," and later the more socially acceptable term "child care," that we've lost sight of the real issue. "Child care" is a bit of a misnomer because it implies we’re only concerned with our child’s safety while we’re at work. It’s less about education and more about providing a safe space for our kids. Any learning that happens along the way is just a bonus. While safety is, of course, a crucial aspect of early care, the real focus should be on education—education through play in a loving environment for all children. That’s the ticket!

What we really should be talking about isn’t just Higher Education, but Early Education. Universities have accumulated over $900 billion in endowments that continue to grow. They receive hundreds of millions in donations from alumni each year and aren’t taxed. While child care centers struggle to stay open, parents can barely afford to pay for it and child care teachers are still among the worst paid. If you ask me, Higher Education should support Early Education. It makes so much sense, and the universities wouldn’t even feel it financially.

Early Childhood Education is where the magic happens. That’s when real change can begin in this country. By supporting initiatives like First Up and a movement to prioritize Early Childhood Education, you’re supporting the foundation of our society—our children—and a hope for a better future.

We have rebranded the teacher awards with this cool new logo designed by our friends at Tag Strategies.

The first change we made was to shorten the name by taking child care out. We did this mostly because, we believe, child care teachers ARE teachers and the world should view them the same way. Also, we want Terri’s name to be synonymous for child care so no need to mention it in the title.

We softened the rose compared to the original and included the heart in the middle to make it more child like and less corporate..

Finally we incorporated the First Up’s blue banner behind the rose, supporting it, like in real life First Up is partnering to help us stand out better... so we can together effect change in how childcare professionals are viewed in this country. The perfect merger of two like minded organizations working together for one common goal. Affordable, quality childcare for all children.

If you know of a teacher that is deserving and should apply for this award please direct them to this link.

A couple weeks ago Jamie Lokoff flew to Seattle to meet with the super talented glassblowing artist Brandyn Callahan to work on the creation of the Kay Lokoff Yellow Rose Award. This award is given for Outstanding Advocacy in Early Childhood Education and presented at the Terri Lynne Lokoff Teacher Awards. Last year's recipient was Sheinelle Jones from Today Show.

Although its only a prototype, this video gives a sneak preview of what the final award will look like when completed in January 2021. The glass piece of art is a hand, representative of Jamie's mother Kay Lokoff, offering or presenting a yellow rose which is for his sister Terri, a symbol for affordable quality child care. The Teacher Award Committee was insistent that the award display all the grace and finesse that was the essence of Kay. When finished it will weigh over 8 pounds (more than an Oscar) because it was important that a big part of the award's physical features was that it felt significant, that it had gravity and represented the importance that child care means to our society.

The Terri Lynne Lokoff Teacher Awards will be held May 22, 2021

We're merging and moving forward!

I'm writing to let you know that The Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation has merged with First Up - a Philadelphia non-profit (formerly called DVAEYC) - primarily to carry on our two most successful programs, the Teacher Awards in honor of Terri and Kay and Museums to Go in honor of Lois Cohan.

In 1987 my parents Kay and Fred Lokoff formed the Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation to honor the memory of my sister Terri. The Foundation was created to raise awareness for the need of quality, affordable child care, to elevate the status of child care teachers in our society and to bring Terri with us into the future. If those were the goals, we have most certainly achieved all of them. However, we always knew that these goals were not the destination, but rather the journey that we were committing to in support of all early educators, past, present, and future. And so our work must, and will, continue.

I am extremely excited and very optimistic about what the merge with First Up will mean for us. The potential for continued growth and expansion feels almost limitless. As we prepare to leverage our combined networks to elevate, engage, and honor child care, I wanted to make sure that honoring Terri’s memory remains a priority. And I wanted to make sure that you, as our trusted partner, had an opportunity to join us in celebrating all that we’ve achieved so far.

On October 19th, at French Creek Golf Course, we will have our annual golf outing under the name Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation for the last time and this is the LAST TIME I will ever ask you for your support for this Foundation. You can help us with the transition as we move to First Up. You can do that by supporting us through this Golf link

https://www.tllccf.org/golf-rsvp

You can join us to play, get a hole sponsorship or there's a place if you just want to make a donation. Of course you can always send a check directly to the Foundation at 100 Ross Road, Suite 160 King of Prussia, PA 19406. All money will go to support The Terri Lynne Lokoff Teacher Awards.

This is not a goodbye from me, but it is the end of a Foundation that certainly had its moment in time. We were like none other. All the elaborate Galas we threw.. at the Race Track, 30th Street Station, The Franklin Institute, Memorial Hall (Now Please Touch), the Crystal Tea Room and many more. I can still feel the love, the warmth and the generosity that poured from all that attended. When I think of those days, the images sparkle in my brain like a slow motion scene out of a movie. I see Helene and my mom dancing on the floor celebrating... celebrating what they accomplished together.

I’ll close this letter with a heartfelt thank you for each one of you, whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or joined us somewhere along the way, I invite and encourage you to stay involved with us as we keep moving forward. We turned a tragedy into something special that has lifted people up and helped so many along. We did it together. We did a good thing.

I hope everyone is safe and healthy.

Love to you all.

Jamie Lokoff

The dual crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic recession has threatened a permanent and dramatic contraction of the childcare industry.

Congratulations to all 50 winners of the 2020 National Child Care Teacher Awards. You all are incredible people that do amazing work. The Zoom ceremony was uplifting and emotional. Listen to National Child Care Teacher of the Year Connie Mosher speak after receiving her award. I think she voiced what many, if not all the teachers, have felt at some point in their career or are feeling now.
