FIMRC: Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children FIMRC was founded in 2002 with the mission of improving access to medical care for underprivileged children around the world.

FIMRC is a global nonprofit organization committed to improving healthcare access in medically underserved communities via clinical services, public health education, and community outreach. Today, our reach has grown to encompass project sites in nine different countries offering a range of clinical services and health education for children and families. As part of our mission, we are dedicated to bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world public health initiatives with volunteer opportunities and virtual fellowships that connect participants with cultural experiences around the globe. These hands-on programs give individuals the opportunity to play a vital role in addressing some of the most pressing health challenges of our time. FIMRC is made up of more than 3,000 dedicated staff and volunteers worldwide. Our organization is generously supported by the thousands of globally-minded individuals who contribute their time, resources, and donations to our programs every year.

FIMRC works alongside local communities to promote health, foster meaningful connections, and create opportunities for learning and service. 🩺

From medical campaigns that bring health services and education closer to the community, to programs with children focused on health, learning, and healthy habits, our work is rooted in collaboration. Volunteers contribute their time and skills alongside local community members to help bring each experience to life. 👧📚

At local health centers, volunteers can also gain insight into the healthcare system through clinical rotations and observation of routine care, turning each experience into an opportunity to learn. 🏥

And sometimes, community care looks like something as simple as spending time together—whether that’s connecting with older adults, sharing a conversation, or creating a moment of joy. 🤝💙

Every experience is different, but the heart of our work remains the same: health, connection, and learning through experiences that bring people together.

Recap: One month in Huancayo with Victoria 🇺🇸💙

Victoria, a student from Georgetown University in the U.S., who spent four weeks in Huancayo with FIMRC as part of her international health experience.

🧒 Victoria participated in educational workshops with children, focusing on health, healthy habits, and the importance of taking care of their well-being.

👩‍👧‍👦 She also participated in a workshop with the mothers, creating a space to share knowledge, connect with families, and address topics related to health and well-being.

✨ Beyond the activities, Victoria brought her enthusiasm, empathy, and willingness to learn to FIMRC. This experience allowed her to strengthen her communication and teamwork skills, and gain a deeper understanding of community-based health work. 🌎

✨ Meet Victoria!

Victoria is a student at Georgetown University from California, and she spent a month volunteering with FIMRC in Huancayo, Peru. 🇺🇸🇵🇪🩺

During her time in Peru, Victoria took part in different health programs and had the opportunity to learn alongside healthcare professionals, support the community, and even observe surgeries. One of the things that interested her most was seeing the differences between the healthcare systems in Peru and the United States.🩺🌎

Beyond healthcare, Victoria also enjoyed discovering Peruvian culture. For her, the experience was a chance to learn, connect, and gain a new perspective on global health. 🌎✨

For Julia and Raquel, volunteering in Alajuelita meant stepping into a new culture, a new healthcare setting, and a community where care is built through trust. 🇨🇷🩺

They came as students looking for hands-on experience. But the experience became more than an opportunity to support patients in the clinic.

It was a chance to connect with the community and see firsthand how connection matters, and how community itself can be part of the healing process.

At FIMRC, supporting these communities goes beyond medicine. We do our best to create spaces where our patients feel safe, welcomed, happy, and valued. And Julia and Raquel’s energy, kindness, and willingness to help made this week a beautiful one for both our patients and our local team.

A full truck of medications just arrived at our clinic in Alajuelita, Costa Rica 🚚🤩🎉 a contribution from our new partner, Eurofarma.

For many of our patients, getting a consultation is only half the battle. Accessing the medicine they actually need is often harder. That’s why we’re incredibly grateful to Eurofarma for this first contribution of approximately $29,000 in medication. 🚚💊

Thank you, Eurofarma, for helping us close that gap and make treatment more accessible for the Alajuelita community!🩺

📍🇪🇨 Anconcito, Ecuador. A coastal community where families face real gaps in healthcare access, including high rates of childhood malnutrition and limited consistent care.

When volunteers from Southern Illinois University joined our local team here, we were able to reach more people: children, families, and older adults who came in for health screenings, nutrition checks, dental care, and more.

That’s what volunteer presence does. It doesn’t replace the work, it expands our reach. And in a place like Anconcito, that reach matters.
