After our sold-out show last night, you have one last chance to see The Bookstore, today at 1pm at Parkway Central Library in Philadelphia (Literature Department 2nd Floor). Come and see this FREE production!

And we want to introduce you to our playwright, and the 2026 winner of the Beacon Award: Nancy Marie!

Nancy Marie is an award winning author, actress, educator, and advocate. Her poem What Ntozake Said is featured in the mini documentary project, We Sing a Black Girl’s Song. She has completed five full length plays including The Bookstore, which was nominated for the 2025 Pulitzer Prize. Nancy’s stage debut was in the Joseph Papp NY Shakespeare Festival production of The Wedding Band, preceded by her television debut on Wonderama & followed by her motion picture debut in MGM’s Fame. Other notable credits include her BroadwayWorld nominated performances as Chelle in the Stagecrafter’s production of Detroit ‘67 and Queen Elizabeth in the Theatre in the X production of Richard III. She has shared her wealth of experience as both a speaker and planner at conferences and festivals across the country including The African American Literary & Media Conference in Reno, Nevada, The Philadelphia Black Film & Media Conference, The SOL Film Festival in Norfolk, Virginia, The Brother 2 Brother Literary Symposium in Houston, Texas, The Boynton Beach Arts Explosion, and The South Florida Youth in Film Festival. She is the proud mother of seven and grandmother of nine beautiful children.

🎭 Meet Zuhairah, who is our amazing director and plays Ura Shazad in this week's staged reading of "THE BOOKSTORE".

Zuhairah originally hails from Brooklyn NY and currently resides in Philadelphia. She is the recipient of the Lunt-Fontanne Award, where she's worked with Broadway Tony Award Winning Director Jerry Zaks. She has worked with Academy Award Nominee Colman Domingo, Woodie King Jr, and Golden Globe winner Regina Taylor.

Directorial & Acting Credits include; Passage Theatre (Jitney/ Upcoming) Producer Theatre Off- Broadway( Screaming for Life)
Curio Theatre (Sojourner) Arden Theatre (Intimate Apparel) Wilma Theatre (Fat Ham) and Quintessence Theatre (Flyin West).

Morgan Charéce is a Philadelphia native and a multidisciplinary, Barrymore Award-winning artist.

Some of her previous regional credits include Beneatha in Raisin in the Sun (People’s Light) Ernestine Crump in Crumbs from the Table of Joy, Mariane in Tartuffe, Nina in The Royale, Gwendolen in Travesties, and Margaret Moore in A Man for All Seasons (Lantern Theater Company)

A Philadelphia native, Rafi Mills recently completed his studies at Temple University. He is so excited to be returning to The Bookstore! Recent credits include Romeo and Juliet (Arden Theatre Company) and Giovanni's Room (Quintessence Theater Group).

🎭 Meet Joyous Whitfield, who plays Mark Lee in this week's staged reading of "THE BOOKSTORE."

 Joyous is honored to be working with Beacon again for "THE BOOKSTORE" and believes it is a wonderful story that needs to be told.

With a love for spending time in the classroom teaching theater, Joyous has taught for Philly Young Playwrights, The Lantern Theater, The Wilma Theater, and Enchantment Theater.

🎭 Meet Sterling Calhoun, who plays Barry in this week's staged reading of "THE BOOKSTORE." 

A Philadelphia native, Sterling was born to an African-American father and a Bajan mother. Gifted both academically and athletically, Sterling always had a passion for the arts. A vibrant, talented, and trained actor, model, and writer. Sterling has left the runway to take his place on the theatrical stage as well as film. His recent credits include Derek (understudy) in "Holy Grail of Memphis", Ngago in Ego Po’s "Les Blanc", and Aaron the Moor in Forgotten Lore’s "Titus Andronicus".

It's 2026 Philly Theatre Week and We are excited to feature a staged reading of our 2026 Beacon Award Winner and Pulitzer Prize-nominated play THE BOOKSTORE. 📚 🎭

Friday, May 1st at First United Methodist Church of Germantown at 7:30pm

and Saturday, May 2nd at Parkway Central Library of Philadelphia (2nd Floor, Literature Dept) at 1:00pm.

The Bookstore, by Nancy Marie (directed by Zuhairah McGill): Tells the story of a young man’s attempt to fulfill his dream of meeting Malcolm X, leading him to a bookstore in Harlem. Three years later, he returns as an unwilling participant in the COINTELPRO operation launched against it by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI. The Bookstore is loosely based on and written in memory of Sister Una Mulzac and the Liberation Bookstore.
