Congratulations to Paola for receiving The DAISY Award for going above and beyond in patient education and discharge, enabling the patient to feel confident in their ability to care for themselves. Her bilingual skills further connected with and supported the patient’s understanding of discharge planning.

Congratulations to Paola Pedraza-Rivera, BSN, RN-BC, clinical nurse on the Med Surg Telemetry at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, on receiving the May/June DAISY Award. Paola, who is bilingual in Spanish, is often asked to help relay medical information to augment the approved interpreter service in a way that feels clear and understandable. She was recognized by a colleague for supporting a patient who was being discharged and needed detailed teaching to care for himself at home. Paola took the time to walk the patient through each step, answered all his questions, and made sure he felt confident and comfortable before he left. Thank you, Paola, for the compassion and teamwork you bring to your patients and your unit.

🥳🎓Congratulations to our nursing graduate, Jocelyn Zavala Garcia! Jocelyn has earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Villanova University! 💙

Let’s wish her best of luck as she prepares for the NCLEX!

We are proud of Jocelyn for being named a Fulbright scholar for an ETA in Spain! Ask her about her special project, A Community-Based Participatory Research Program to Identify Lead Exposure Risks and Community Priorities, where her and her co-authors work with the community to establish research priorities to minimize future lead exposure risk in a community with a large Latinx population (Norristown, Pennsylvania). Jocelyn worked on various research projects focused on early flavor learning, urban heat islands, the impacts of climate change on reproductive health, and mental health community health worker training programs.

Outside of research, Jocelyn volunteered as a tutor and art teacher at CCATE (Centro de Cultura, Arte, Trabajo y Educacion), a non-profit organization in Norristown, PA.

She traveled to La Romana, Dominican Republic to provide health services and education to the communities in bateyes with other nursing students. She will also soon be returning as a Spanish Medical Interpreter Volunteer for the Farm Worker Family Health Program in southwest Georgia.

On Saturday, May 30th 2026 NAHN Philadelphia's Contigo Mentorship Program kicked off it's Meet and Greet at La Cañelita. Mentees and mentors gathered over delicious Colombian coffee and arepas de queso while sharing nursing experiences, tips, and professional goals!

We’re thrilled to announce that our chapter is launching a program that will help strengthen NAHN’s values and help exemplify nursing leadership.

The purpose of NAHN Contigo is to foster and strengthen leadership through collaboration and familismo. Through this voluntary program, participants are paired to enhance personal and professional skills, identify and achieve both short- and long-term goals, and support NAHN’s mission.

The energy from the Super Bowl was still in the air this morning during the keynote and it carried with us throughout the entire day here on Capitol Hill at the Hispanic Health Policy Summit.

As members of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) Philadelphia Chapter, we are here embracing our responsibility as Latina nurses advocating, learning, and using our voices to advance health equity for the communities we serve.

Grateful for a powerful first day filled with education, collaboration, purpose, and advocacy. This is what leadership in action looks like.
