Back to school is also a time to reconnect.

When Healthy NewsWorks student reporters interviewed former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, they asked an important question: Why is loneliness a health problem?

Dr. Murthy explained that loneliness can affect both our mental and physical health and that small actions can make a difference. Reaching out to a friend, talking with a classmate, or simply showing up for someone can help build connection and a sense of belonging.

As students return to school, it’s a good reminder that building healthy connections can start with something small.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, more than 2,200 students participated in Healthy NewsWorks programs this school year—an increase of more than 50% since the launch of our Building a Healthy Future Campaign.

With just two weeks remaining, we're closer than ever to reaching our goal and expanding opportunities for young people to build health literacy, strengthen communication skills, and become informed advocates for their own well-being.
