Bird Safe Philly is a partnership that aims to bring awareness and solutions for bird collisions with glass and light pollution in the greater Philadelphia region. Bird Safe Philly is a partnership led by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, Audubon Mid-Atlantic, Delaware Valley Ornithological Club, National Audubon Society, Valley Forge Audubon Society, and Wyncote Audubon Society. The partnership is designed to help protect native birds in the greater Philadelphia area from a variety of issues that can harm birds in urban areas, especially issues that can cause birds to collide with buildings and other human made structures. Bird Safe Philly was created in response to a mass collision event that occurred on October 2, 2020 in which thousands of migratory birds died after colliding with buildings in Center City Philadelphia.

We're beginning a new series: ! Retrofitting is the process of fitting the windows and glass of buildings with bird-friendly, deterrent solutions such as 2"x2" matrices of dots. is a great example! Building retrofit programs are needed to prevent birds from colliding with glass. Bird Safe Philly actively engages with building owners and managers, especially with those who may not know much about these issues, to help educate them and to participate in retrofitting those buildings. We have a great number of volunteers who help with these projects, and we would like to highlight a couple of them.

Meet Wendy! For our series, Wendy gives us some insight on her involvement and experience with :

How did you get involved with retrofitting and how long have you been retrofitting with Bird Safe Philly?

I heard about retrofitting at the Liberty Bird Alliance board meetings. I have volunteered for retrofitting projects for the last 2 years.

Throughout this retrofitting experience what has been your one take-away from it?

In addition to protecting birds, retrofitting on public buildings is great for calling attention to birds. People who wouldn't normally think about birds are intrigued by the dots.

What advice or words would you have for someone who is interested in helping birds?
Retrofitting is easy to do, and since we often work in pairs, it's a fun way to meet other birders. I'd encourage anyone interested in helping birds to join for an installation.

Has retrofitting with Bird Safe Philly prompted you to take action at your own home or another building in your neighborhood/community?

I'm looking forward to helping with more installations in the future.

Monitors across our different locations found at least 13 different window strike victims today, 3 of which made it to rehab at ! One of the birds was a stunned Blackpoll Warbler that was reported in by a helpful member of the public.

Each monitoring day presents different challenges, but our monitors and drivers are always ready to go during migration! Thank you as always to our volunteers.

Rainy weather and windy conditions; monitors have been out and experiencing autumn as it rolls in this week. Here are some photos of window strike victims they have found lately.

Birds in these photos include; Northern Flicker, Tennessee Warbler, Black and White Warblers, Common Yellowthroats, and an Ovenbird.

One our Acopian Birdsaver Workshop participants took their project home and installed it on their sliding glass door.! We gave folks the options of screws or heavy-duty outdoor velcro for attaching the vinyl channel to their home. The homeowners went with the velcro and said it's perfect!

Monitors Stephen, Christy, and Tim were out early in the morning, searching for window strike victims.
Stephen and Christy found four (!) American Redstarts. One was rescued from a busy bike lane. Unfortunately one Redstart passed away, but the other three were able to make it to rehabilitation along with a Northern Waterthrush. Thank you to our surprise driver for shuttling them off to for rehabilitation.

Other birds found over the past several days include Common Yellowthroats, an Eastern Wood-Pewee, Ovenbirds, a Cape May Warbler, a Northern Parula, a Brown Thrasher, Black-and-white Warblers, Magnolia Warblers, a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, and many others. Window strike victims can be found in a variety of scenarios, so keep your eyes peeled.

Did you know that Feather Friendly Bird Collision Deterrent Markers also sells solar bird-bird safe window films? This looks pretty cool and maybe we will get to try this someday on one of our projects.

In a recent interview conducted by Cynthia Mwenja, Dr. Daniel Klem discusses the alarmingly high annual rate of bird fatalities due to bird-glass collisions. However, alongside these rising fatalities, he also notes the growing momentum of bird-safe practices and projects, many of which are directly attributable to his work.

Dr. Klem’s journey began with his childhood fascination with nature and wildlife, eventually leading him to pursue the field of ornithology. Over time, his pursuit established a new area of academic study and, in turn, a new focus for environmental activism.

Current estimates range from 1.28 billion to 3.6 billion bird-glass collision fatalities each year in the US alone, with 70% of collisions fatal and a 350% increase in estimated deaths. The issue, Klem confirms, is that birds do not perceive glass as a barrier, with both clear and reflective glass posing major threats.

Accordingly, Dr. Klem’s research has contributed to many bird-safe initiatives and practices, including bird-safe products, lights-out campaigns, and even the sharing of local radar showing bird migrations.

Companies now exist around Klem’s research discoveries, such as Feather Friendly®, which he considers “the most prominent producer/manufacturer of bird-safe products, specifically external films.”
