Bird Safe Philly is a partnership that aims to bring awareness and solutions for bird collisions with glass and light pollution in the greater Philadelphia region. Bird Safe Philly is a partnership led by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, Audubon Mid-Atlantic, Delaware Valley Ornithological Club, National Audubon Society, Valley Forge Audubon Society, and Wyncote Audubon Societ

y. The partnership is designed to help protect native birds in the greater Philadelphia area from a variety of issues that can harm birds in urban areas, especially issues that can cause birds to collide with buildings and other human made structures. Bird Safe Philly was created in response to a mass collision event that occurred on October 2, 2020 in which thousands of migratory birds died after colliding with buildings in Center City Philadelphia.

🪟 Their journey spans continents and shouldn't end with a window strike.

Over the past several decades, tens of thousands of bird-window collisions have been documented at just a handful of Chicago buildings. In 2023, a single night at McCormick Place resulted in the deaths of roughly 1,000 birds, highlighting the urgent need for action.
📉 After collision deterrents were installed at McCormick Place, early data showed bird collisions dropped by more than 90%. Bird-friendly buildings work!
Chicago has the opportunity to become a national leader in bird conservation by adopting mandatory bird-friendly building standards. If you live or work in Chicago, please contact your Alderperson and urge them to co-sponsor the bird-friendly building amendment led by Alders Maria Hadden, Brian Hopkins, and Ruth Cruz.

Please act today to help ABC and our partners build a future where Chicago’s buildings are no longer a deadly obstacle for birds:

The Coalition is made up of the following groups and organizations who have joined forces to help the public tell their elected officials that Chicago should be bird friendly:
American Bird Conservancy
Bird Conservation Network
Bird Friendly Chicago
Chicago Bird Collision Monitors
Studio Gang
The Nature Conservancy in Illinois

We completed the Feather Friendly Bird Collision Deterrent Markers installation on the remaining five windows at the Glenside Free Library this afternoon. Our friends from Nolan Painting Inc completed the installation after helping earlier in the day at Conshohocken Free Library. Bird Safe Philly is proud to have worked with five different public libraries this spring with our faithful corps of volunteers and the incredible support we have received from Nolan Painting!

We completed the Feather Friendly Bird Collision Deterrent Markers installation at the The Conshohocken Free Library this morning. The “low” windows at the facility had been completed many weeks ago. Today, Nolan Painting assigned a strong corps of their workers to address the “high” windows including three “cathedral” windows on the third story of the building. A highlight was the presentation of the Feather Friendly signage to Claire Nolan and Hollie Holst! Kudos once again to Nolan Painting Inc for all of their volunteer support. We could not have completed our spring retrofit projects without Nolan Painting!

Re-posting some photos from this season. Yesterday, May 31, was the last day of our Spring migration monitoring season. As migrating birds move on from Philly, our volunteers take a break for the summer, before starting again in the fall!

A huge, huge thank you to our many volunteers who made this season's monitoring possible. For 61 days (or more, if you're our lead monitor Stephen!), monitors have made time in their days to be out in the early morning at locations across the city, looking for window strike victims. This critical data collection wouldn't be possible without monitors, and injured birds wouldn't have a second chance at life without our volunteer drivers.

We'll see you all again in the fall!

Interested in signing up to volunteer next season? Check out the sign-up sheet in the link in our bio! 🍁🍂

The race was on today! We needed to finish the Germantown Academy breezeway Feather Friendly Bird Collision Deterrent Markers project with the school's ecoclub before the students finish up the spring semester in just a few days. With the help of the students, GA staff, Bird Safe Philly, and some new retrofitting volunteers from Liberty Bird Alliance, we were able to successfully complete this project in 4 hours. In total, we retrofitted ~1,500 sq ft of glass for just ONE breezeway.

Many thanks to the GA students for initiating this work and collaborating with Bird Safe Philly to make it happen! We hope to partner with GA on future retrofitting projects!
