Don’t forget to pick your fish and learn about Puget Sound Salmon Survival!

Time is running out to pick your fish for our special autumnal fish-tracking game! Survive the Sound: Homecoming will follow the journeys of 10 brave spawning salmon as they make their way back towards the river to complete their life cycle.

The fish will start swimming on Monday, October 12 and will progress further and further throughout the rest of the week (as long as they can stay alive, at least). Be sure to visit the www.SurviveTheSoung.org to choose your favorite fish before they start swimming, invite your friends and family to join a team for some friendly competition, and then tune in next week to find out what happens!

The Suquamish Tribe is working with Puget Sound Restoration Fund to restore access to native basket cockles—a traditional First Food with deep cultural importance in Washington’s Puget Sound.

Tribal members have reported that cockles are harder to find on beaches where families once harvested them.

The partnership combines hatchery work, beach trials and research into shellfish health and genetic diversity. Researchers have tested protective mesh and different planting methods to learn how cockles can survive after relocation.

The goal extends beyond increasing shellfish numbers: it is about supporting traditional harvests and the connections between food, community and the shoreline.

Washington Sea Grant detailed the research on September 29, 2025, with further reporting in February 2026. This is a continuing restoration effort, not an announcement that populations have fully recovered.
