EBALDC and Abode Housing Development celebrated the groundbreaking of 34th and San Pablo, an affordable housing community bringing 59 units to West Oakland, with community leaders, project partners, and neighbors with a speaking program and Night Market!

The Night Market, an homage to SPARC-IT Place, was youth-entrepreneur focused in collaboration with Storefront Records!

“After intentional community engagement and planning we are excited to see 34th and San Pablo break ground,” said Janelle Chan, CEO of EBALDC. “Not only will it bring much needed housing to help prevent displacement for neighborhood residents, but it will offer space for community businesses and connection.”

The ceremony’s featured speakers included Congresswoman Simon, Supervisor Bas, Oakland’s Mayor Lee, Felicity Gasser with State HCD, Dominica Henderson from OHA, and Oakland resident, Ms. Cook.

The groundbreaking featured CA Hotel tenant, Hungry Kitchens, who provided pre-event snacks and Drinks!
The night market featured CA Hotel tenant and community collaborator, solfood alongside other community vendors.

📣 We are proud to announce Marcus Guillard and Libby Carruth of SiteMatter Studio as the selected artists for the permanent public art installation at our 34th & San Pablo affordable housing development in West Oakland.

Their concept, Figurative Tapestry, is a large-scale installation of layered, perforated metal panels filled with silhouetted portraits of West Oakland community members. From the street it reads as a shifting mosaic of light and color, when up close, you see faces. Look through the cutouts, and you see the neighborhood framed by the people who shaped it.

Portraits will be gathered through community recommendations and free, professional, public photo sessions, starting with our first community event:

🗓️ Friday May 29, 4:30-7pm — Future of the Bay Area Youth Market & 34SP Groundbreaking SiteMatter Studio will be on site taking portraits. Look for their tent with the Figurative Tapestry banner. Come celebrate, come be seen. 3501 San Pablo Ave, Oakland.

More portrait sessions and community dates coming soon. Follow along EBALDC's socials to stay up to date!
