Barzakh Majlis
After five sold-out shows, Barzakh Majlis returns to Brooklyn this Friday, June 12th.

This edition features one of our most exciting lineups to date, led by The Brooklyn Nomads, a New York City–based ensemble creating bold, contemporary artistic experiences rooted in Arabic musical traditions and shaped through collaboration across cultures. Led by oud player and composer Hadi Eldebek and co-founded with percussionist Mohamad Eldebek, the ensemble has performed at institutions including the Kennedy Center, BAM, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, TED, and MIT.

Joining them for one night in Brooklyn:

Bengali folk, Indian classical music, jazz, and R&B influences woven into a performance of Bengali classics and original compositions.

Melvin Gibbs Ensemble: Nzambici
The final performance in Melvin Gibbs’ multi-part residency with FourOneOne, Melvin Gibbs Ensemble: Nzambici is the second extended musical work created by Gibbs in consultation with theoretical cosmologist and jazz musician Stephon Alexander.

The first, Ogodo Quanta, was performed at the 2019 Vision Festival by an expanded version of God Particle, the musical group co-lead by Alexander and Gibbs. Taking inspiration from Philip Glass’s frequent explorations of scientific concepts and figures in his music, Gibbs will compose the work and Alexander will give creative and scientific advice, but neither will perform in the Melvin Gibbs Ensemble. Instead, they’ve hand-picked a group of creative musicians—saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, trumpeter Chris Ryan Williams, pianist/keyboardist deVon Russell Gray, bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Tcheser Holmes—to implement their vision.

Manuel Linhares presents Atlântico, a CD release performance blending Portuguese traditions and contemporary jazz.
Atlântico reflects a life between the shores of the Atlantic, from New York’s pulse to Porto’s melancholy. This exclusive June 9 release show offers a first exclusive live preview before the June 12 launch, featuring an international ensemble led by Manuel Linhares.

Lisa Parrott's We Love Ornette
Acoustic PrimeTime, inspired by Denardo Coleman: a nimble, dynamic homage to Ornette, New Orleans polyphony, and M-Base. We Love Ornette!

After a series of workshops with Coleman’s son and PrimeTime drummer Denardo, the goal was to build an acoustic version of PrimeTime. The resulting jumble is engaging, dynamic and nimble, not only a nod to Ornette, but to New Orleans polyphony and the inverted grooves of Steve Coleman’s M-Base.

We Love Ornette is a harmolodic dream team!
