New York City Environmental Justice Alliance

New York City Environmental Justice Alliance Through our efforts, member organizations coalesce around specific common issues that threaten the ability for low-income communities of color to thrive.

Founded in 1991, the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance (NYC-EJA) is a non-profit citywide membership network linking grassroots organizations of color in their struggle for environmental justice. NYC-EJA empowers its member organizations to advocate for improved environmental conditions and against inequitable environmental burdens by the coordination of campaigns designed to inform City and State policies. NYC-EJA is led by the community-based organizations that it serves, with its board elected by its member groups, who set policy and guide program development. What distinguishes NYC-EJA is our ability to:

- Create, nurture, and organize a collective voice to mobilize citywide support to resolve environmental justice issues.
- Highlight key environmental justice issues and policies that arise in multiple communities, or impact citywide conditions, requiring innovative and creative problem solving.
- Involve people of color and other stakeholders directly affected by environmental justice issues in leadership roles to resolve them. NYC-EJA, our members and allies have defined environmental/climate justice advocacy in New York, including: the Waterfront Justice Project, (NYC’s first citywide community resiliency campaign) the Sandy Regional Assembly (the only regional grassroots coalition which prepared the Sandy Regional Recovery Plan), the historic 2014 People’s Climate March (the largest climate mobilization in history), NYC’s first “waste equity” law (reduced permitted capacity for waste transfer stations in NYC’s most overburdened communities), Transform Don’t Trash NY (the most significant proposal to overhaul NYC’s commercial waste system in decades), Power NYS Act (the most protective power plant siting law in the U.S., which prevents environmentally over-burdened communities from any net increases in local air pollution from new power plants); Climate Works for All (advocated for the 2019 NYC Climate Mobilization Act, the most ambitious climate action plan by any U.S. city), NY Renews (advocated for the NYS Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act, the most aggressive climate action legislation among the states), congestion pricing for NYC’s central business district (the first by any North American city) and the NYC Climate Justice Agenda.

🚚⚡NY’s e-commerce boom shouldn’t come at the cost of our health. Diesel truck traffic from mega warehouses is choking frontline communities.

During the Toxic Warehouse tour, hosted by Last Mile Coalition, ElectrifyNY and Teamsters, we heard directly from Borough President Antonio Reynoso, Assemblymember Marcela Mitaynes, community members, and our coalition partners as they shed light on the effect the warehouse boom is having on frontline communities.

Thank you to Red Hook Initiative for taking us around and showing the impacts of Amazon’s warehouses on the neighborhood.

Lifelong Democrat Hon. Gustavo Rivera serves as State Senator for the 33rd Senate District in the Northwest Bronx. Since getting elected in November of 2010, Senator Rivera campaigned on the promise that he would work hard to represent the interests of his Bronx neighbors in Albany and restore the public’s trust in their elected officials. In accordance with his goals, for the last 16 years, Senator Rivera has been a champion fighter for the Bronx, increasing the minimum wage, bringing record funding to our schools, protecting tenants against landlord abuses, passing paid family leave for families across the state, and as Chair of the Senate Health Committee since 2019, he has advocated for and won policies to make our healthcare system more accessible and affordable for all New Yorkers. NYC-EJA is proud to honor Senator Rivera for his history of environmental advocacy, especially in his role in sponsoring the Extreme Heat Mortality Bill.

More vegetation -> less heat

Recent data show that NYC overall has seen increases in vegetation cover, which translates to more areas within the city having "enough" vegetation to start combating a critical aspect of the urban heat island effect (and its major impact on public health).

But not all neighborhoods, or the landscapes within them, are equitably green.
