Happy Women’s Equality Day! 💜
At El Museo, uplifting the work of Latine women artists is central to our mission. For more than a decade, our exhibitions have celebrated the practices and perspectives of artists including Marisol, Zilia Sánchez, Liliana Porter, Amalia Mesa-Bains, Sophie Rivera, Coco Fusco (), and Candida Alvarez () — artists whose work has expanded how we understand identity, history, representation, memory, and belonging.
From Marisol’s groundbreaking sculptures exploring gender and social roles (2014-2015), Sánchez’s investigations of the body and abstraction (2019-2020); Porter’s conceptual explorations of representation and reality (2018-2019), all the way to Mesa-Bains’s feminist engagements with cultural memory and history (2024), our exhibitions reflect the breadth and richness of Latine women’s artistic practices.
That commitment continues today. Over the past two years, solo exhibitions of Rivera (2026), Fusco (2025-2026), and Alvarez (2025) have brought their distinct perspectives to the forefront — from Rivera’s groundbreaking contributions to Nuyorican photography, to Fusco’s incisive interrogations of power and colonialism, to Alvarez’s vibrant explorations of abstraction and cultural memory.
Together, these exhibitions reflect an enduring commitment to ensuring that Latine women artists are seen, celebrated, and recognized as essential stories of American art. This Women’s Equality Day, we reaffirm our commitment to creating space, visibility, and recognition for the women artists
