In recognition of World Music Therapy Week (April 10–15), we’re celebrating the powerful, everyday work of our music therapists, professionals who use music not support emotional, physical, and social well-being across the hospital.

Here, we’re highlighting Music Therapist Olivia and her work in the Emergency Department. Through environmental music therapy, Olivia helps shape the atmosphere of a space that can often feel overwhelming, bringing moments of calm and connection into the experience of being in a pediatric emergency department.

Her presence extends beyond patients and families. By inviting staff into the music, she creates a shared environment that supports everyone in the space.

These moments carry real weight. They soften the edges of the ED, support regulation, and remind us that care can be both clinical and deeply human.

Our Teddy Bear Clinic at PS 171 was a huge hit! Kids became the doctors and nurses for the day, helping their stuffed animals get check-ups, bandages, and lots of TLC.

This special event was led by our ED Child Life Specialist, Lauren Keyes, in collaboration with the Mount Sinai Emergency Medicine team, helping kids learn about healthcare in a fun and friendly way.

Thank you to Teddy Bears on Call for helping to sponsor this event and provide teddy bears for every child.

🫧 Happy Child Life & Creative Arts Therapy Month! 🫧

Stay tune throughout the month of March to learn more about our day to day work and how we support our patients and families! 🧸✨🎨🎶🎭🐕‍🦺🦮🦮
In this video, Child Life Specialist Lauren guides a patient through the steps of receiving an IV using a teddy bear as the patient. Through preparation, teaching, and guided practice, the patient practices coping strategies, asks questions, and builds confidence along the way.
When patients understand what to expect and have opportunities to practice skills in a supportive environment, anxiety is reduced, coping is strengthened, and medical procedures can feel more manageable and successful.

Gaming & Tech Volunteer Opportunity!
DM or email [email protected]

We’re inviting a small number of students (18+) to join our experienced Child Life and Creative Arts Therapy team for a specialized summer volunteer role focused on using gaming and interactive technology as tools for connection, coping, and expression for children and teens in the hospital.
This is a good opportunity for those with an interest in pre-med, child development, education, or related areas.

Gaming & Technology Volunteers may:
Work alongside staff to host gaming sessions with patients at bedside and in activity spaces
Help prepare, organize, and care for gaming systems and equipment used with patients
Learn how play is intentionally used in healthcare to support emotional wellbeing, agency, connection, and create opportunities for reflection and community

Preferred qualifications:
Working knowledge of current game consoles and platforms (PS5, Switch 2, Xbox, Steam/PC, Apple / Android tablets, Meta Quest), with an emphasis on local multiplayer and cooperative games
Experience working with school-age through high school–aged children
Multilingual abilities (Spanish, etc.) are a plus

Details:
Summer term commitment: one or two 4-hour shifts per week
Training and ongoing support provided
Interview required for consideration
This is a small pilot program with limited spots, focused on building a sustainable gaming and technology community for pediatric patients. We’re looking for adult volunteers who want to help shape that work from the ground up.

🎂 Happy 20th Birthday to our Child Life Zone, and heartfelt thanks to the Teammates for Kids Foundation for their ongoing support of this incredible patient and family space. We also want to wish a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Garth Brooks, whose foundation’s generosity has helped make this space possible for the patients and families we serve.
For two decades, The Zone has been a place where pediatric patients can experience joy, even while in the hospital. A space for play, gaming, creativity, community, and connection. The Zone is a place to step away from the medical units and into something that feels human, joyful, and shared.
Over the past few weeks, we invited patients, families, and staff to share what they love about The Zone. This video brings those voices together. Twenty reflections for twenty years. Each one a reminder that this space is not just about activities, but about how people feel when they are here.
We are incredibly proud of what The Zone has been and deeply grateful to the patients, families, Child Life & Creative Arts Therapy staff, volunteers, and community partners who have shaped it over the last two decades. We’re excited to keep growing, listening, and creating spaces that support joy, connection, and healing for years to come.
