After years of worsening seizures, failed medications, and declining mental health, Lucy Foote finally found answers at the Mount Sinai Epilepsy Center. Under the care of Dr. Lara Marcuse and Dr. Fedor Panov, Lucy received a more precise diagnosis and underwent a minimally invasive laser ablation procedure that targeted the source of her seizures. One year later, Lucy is proudly celebrating being seizure free. Beyond surgery, Lucy has embraced meditation, yoga, journaling, and lifestyle changes to support her healing journey. Today, she’s using her experience to inspire others living with epilepsy to advocate for themselves, trust their care team, and find hope in the hardest moments.

During Stroke Awareness Month, Mount Sinai researchers and clinicians are highlighting an important reality: strokes can happen suddenly, even in healthy and active individuals, and symptoms are not always obvious.

In a recent first-person story for Mount Sinai Today, writer and editor David Schwab shared the experience of realizing his longtime tennis partner was having a stroke while they were playing — despite subtle symptoms that could easily have been overlooked.

Laura Stein, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, emphasized the importance of recognizing sudden neurological changes, including vision disturbances, balance issues, confusion, or speech difficulty, and seeking emergency care immediately.

Dr. Stein’s research focuses on improving stroke detection and emergency response systems, advancing efforts to ensure patients receive timely, life-saving care when every minute matters.
