We recently had the opportunity to welcome Council Member Crystal Hudson, Chair of the NYC Council Committee on General Welfare; Chris Gonzalez, Chief Strategy Officer at DSS; and Nichola Hammond, Associate Commissioner of Transitional Family Services at NYC Department of Homeless Services to Magnolia Gardens. CM Hudson is an incredible advocate for the continuum of housing, including emergency stays, permanent, affordable and supportive housing, and URI's PALS program that ensures families and their pets have access to safe housing.

URI is incredibly grateful for CM Hudson's advocacy and thank her for her support of these important issues to New Yorkers and beyond.

Across neighborhoods, families, relationships, and communities, abuse can exist behind closed doors regardless of status, success, or public image.

Survivors deserve more than a response to crisis. They deserve safety, housing, counseling, advocacy, and the support to rebuild with dignity.

Does Everette Green have to live this way?

After 36 years supporting New Yorkers with developmental disabilities, he earns about $21 an hour—roughly $40,000 a year—while preparing for retirement in one of the most expensive cities in the country.

His story, profiled by The New York Times, reflects the reality of thousands of frontline human services workers across New York City—including nearly 1,000 members of Team URI.

Every day, URI staff respond to crises, support survivors of domestic violence, help families experiencing homelessness, care for children, and guide New Yorkers toward safety and stability. Too often, the people doing this essential work are struggling to maintain stability themselves.

Mr. Green supports raising nonprofit human services wages to $29 an hour. We stand with him and every worker demanding the same. The people who care for New York should not have to sacrifice their own security to provide it for others.

Fair pay is not charity. It is justice—and New York must act.

Our hearts are with the loved ones of Mary Golding and all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.

Domestic violence is never just between two people. It leaves children without parents, families grieving unimaginable loss, and communities forever changed.

This devastating case is a reminder that preventing domestic violence requires more than responding after tragedy strikes. Survivors and their families need access to safe housing, counseling, legal advocacy, and community support before violence escalates.
