Where Art Meets Health. Where Every Smile Can Bloom.

When we transformed an abandoned house into the home of the Unspoken Smiles Preventive Dental Clinic, we wanted to create more than a healthcare facility—we wanted to create a place of joy, hope, and belonging.

Our flower mural symbolizes the thousands of children whose futures can be transformed through prevention. Just as flowers need care to grow, every child deserves access to health, confidence, and the opportunity to smile without pain.

Through our Art & Health Initiative, volunteers came together to transform blank walls into a vibrant celebration of wellness, creativity, and community. Every flower represents a child. Every color represents hope. Every brushstroke reflects the belief that healthcare spaces should inspire healing and happiness.

What has been most inspiring is seeing the community’s reaction. As one of the only large-scale artistic murals in the area, the design has quickly become a conversation piece. Pedestrians stop to admire it, cars slow down or pull over to take a closer look, and many people ask, “What is happening here?” Their curiosity opens the door to conversations about prevention, oral health, and our mission to ensure every child can grow up healthy and cavity-free.

A special thank you to all the volunteers who generously donated their time and talent to bring this vision to life. Your work has not only beautified our clinic—it has created a landmark that is already inspiring the community and welcoming children and families with warmth and optimism.

At Unspoken Smiles, we believe that oral health is about more than teeth—it is about dignity, opportunity, and helping every child thrive.

Because there is no health without oral health, and every smile deserves the chance to bloom.

Last week, our team had the privilege of visiting the Centro Educativo de la Alegría (CEA), part of the extraordinary work of the Asociación Obras del Espíritu Santo (Obras del Espíritu Santo ) in Costa Rica.

For decades, AOES has been one of the country’s most impactful social organizations, providing education, healthcare, nutrition, protection, and opportunities to thousands of children and families facing vulnerability. Through the vision and leadership of Padre Sergio Valverde, the organization has become a symbol of hope and social transformation for Costa Rica.

During our visit, the UNSPOKEN SMILES team conducted oral health screenings for 95 children. We found that 48 children (50.5%) had existing cavities, a reminder that oral health challenges continue to affect far too many children and that prevention alone is not enough without access to treatment.

The good news is that every child identified with cavities will receive care at our new Unspoken Smiles Clinic beginning September 9th, Costa Rica’s Children’s Day. What started as a screening will now become a pathway to treatment, ensuring these children receive the care they need regardless of their family’s circumstances.

One of the most meaningful moments of the day came at the end of our visit, when every member of our team received a blessing from Padre Sergio. It was a powerful reminder that the work we do is about more than dentistry—it is about service, dignity, and creating opportunities for children to thrive.

One of the most inspiring discoveries from our visits to schools across Costa Rica has been realizing that much of the infrastructure needed to improve children’s oral health already exists.

In every MEP school we have visited, students have access to clean drinking water and sinks—essential tools for building healthy brushing habits. Even more impressive, some schools have dental chairs and receive regular visits from government dentists. In many of these schools, fewer than 20% of children have cavities.

This is a testament to the vision and investment of the Ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP), as well as the dedication of educators, healthcare professionals, and school leaders across the country.

The lesson is clear: prevention works.

We do not need to start from scratch. We need to build on what already exists and ensure that every school can fully leverage this incredible infrastructure.

Imagine if all 5,400+ public schools in Costa Rica joined a national movement toward one goal:

Zero Cavities. Zero Pain. Zero Barriers to Learning.

Costa Rica has the infrastructure. Now let’s unlock its full potential.

One sink. One toothbrush. One child. One school.

That’s how a nation changes its future.
