A new Gallup poll reveals a troubling reality:

One-third of Americans are cutting back on everyday essentials just to afford healthcare.

People are skipping meals, delaying care, and even putting off major life milestones because of rising costs. And it’s not just low-income households—this is affecting people across the board.

Healthcare affordability shouldn’t force people to make impossible choices.

At NYHealth, we’re working to advance policies and solutions that ensure all New Yorkers can get the care they need—without sacrificing their well-being.

The risks of military service don’t end when troops return home.

In a new op-ed, David Sandman, Ph.D., President and CEO of the New York Health Foundation, and David Shulkin, M.D., former U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs, highlight the urgent need to strengthen su***de prevention efforts for veterans.

Veteran su***de is a persistent crisis—but it is not inevitable. With better data, stronger systems of care, and coordinated action across communities, lives can be saved.

For many veterans, coming home isn’t easy.

In the Adirondack Mountains, Homeward Bound Adirondacks (HBA) offers a refuge, a place where veterans can breathe, reflect, and begin to heal.

With support from the New York Health Foundation, HBA helps veterans navigate post-traumatic stress, depression, and the transition back to civilian life through nature-based retreats and peer-to-peer support.

“Even when it’s 10 degrees below zero, it feels like the mountains are wrapping me up in warmth and support,” said Executive Director Valerie Ainsworth.

By connecting veterans with one another and with the land, HBA reminds us that healing doesn’t have to happen alone, or within four walls. It can start in the quiet of the woods, among those who understand.

Last week, New York Health Foundation convened our third regional roundtable on veterans’ health—this time in Beacon, New York.

We brought together local leaders, service providers, and advocates to discuss the unique needs of Hudson Valley veterans and their families. The conversation covered access to care, peer support, su***de prevention, housing, and community connection, underscoring the importance of collaboration in improving health and wellbeing for those who have served.

A special thank you to just some of the organizations and individuals who participated and shared their insights:

NYS Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Project Coalition
Greene County Department of Human Services (Veterans' Division)
Putnam County NY Veterans Service Agency
Dutchess County Government Office of Veterans Affairs
Mental Health America of Dutchess County, NY
Dwyer Vet2Vet of Putnam
Guardian Revival
NYS Senator Rob Rolison

At NYHealth, we’re proud to serve as a convener, bringing together partners from across New York State to listen, learn, and strengthen the systems that support veterans and their families.

We look forward to continuing this dialogue and building on these partnerships to advance veterans’ health across the State.

Last week, we gathered more than 200 advocates and food equity leaders in New York City to explore ways to protect access to healthy, affordable food amid a changing federal policy landscape.

It was a day filled with insightful conversations and lots of networking! We heard keynote remarks from Corby Ku**er, Executive Director of Food and Society at The Aspen Institute, followed by insights from Sherry Tomasky from New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, Tim Pezzolesi from NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, Andres Vives from Hunger Solutions New York and Amanda D'Ambrosio from Crain's New York Business on state leadership in response to federal changes.

Syracuse University's Colleen Heflin shared research on food insecurity among older adults, and we wrapped up with a discussion with food advocates West Side Campaign Against Hunger's Martina Santos, Josie McClary from Monroe County, NY, and Adirondack Food System Network's Joshua Stephani, moderated by NYHealth's Julia McCarthy.
