Remember how brutally the NYPD’s SRG unit treated protesters in Mott Haven back in 2020 with illegal tactics like “kettling”? There’s finally a bill called the CURB Act that would ban the SRG from protests and stop these violent tactics for good, so please use the link in bio right now to call the NY City Council and tell them to pass it!

SAY HIS NAME: Cyrus Carmack-Belton.

On May 28, 2023, 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton was chased from a convenience store in South Carolina, after being wrongfully accused of stealing bottled water. Store owner Rick Chow pursued Cyrus beyond the store’s property, shot him in the back, and killed him.

This week, Chow was found not guilty of murder, yet Cyrus’ blood remains on his hands.

Make it make sense.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani fired NYC Sheriff Anthony Miranda and replaced him with retired NYPD Lieutenant Edwin Raymond. .raymond_ spent 15 years with the NYPD, authored a book about his experience in the department, and also penned a 2016 New York Times Magazine article titled “A Black Police Officer’s Fight Against the N.Y.P.D.”

The leadership change comes after Miranda faced calls from his own union to resign and multiple federal and local investigations, with Mamdani signaling a desire to clean up the controversy left by the previous administration.

Sheriff Edwin Raymond is no stranger to the fight for justice in New York City. He has a longstanding connection to Justice League NYC, having spoken at a news conference where he called out illegal arrest quotas and their role in mass incarceration. His book “An Inconvenient Cop: My Fight to Change Policing in America” was also book of the month in 2023.

of and a Justice League NYC member was present and publicly supportive when Edwin was promoted to Sergeant, standing alongside him as he fought back against a system that tried to punish him for doing the right thing.

His roots in this movement for accountability and equity run deep, and now he steps into one of the most powerful law enforcement oversight roles in the city.

Congratulations to Sheriff Edwin Raymond, a principled public servant and a true champion of justice, on this well-deserved appointment.

What’s happening at Delaney Hall in Newark is a human rights crisis happening in our backyard.

People report being fed rotten food with live worms, denied toilet paper, and threatened with retaliation for daring to speak out.

This is torture by another name, carried out by a private prison company profiting from caged human beings and nearly 50 PEOPLE have died in custody under this administration, the highest toll in at least two decades.

Silence is not an option.

✊🏾 Take action:
👉🏾 If you’re in the NY/NJ area — get to Delaney Hall. If you can’t, share this post and donate to legal defense for those on the ground. Link in bio.

📣 Contact Governor Murphy’s office and demand the NJ Attorney General investigate Delaney Hall immediately.

No more waiting.

This is a window into the culture of contempt that Black people, immigrants, and protesters have always known exists behind the badge.

A transfer is not accountability. Moving a man with a documented history of violence and abuse allegations from one facility to another is a displacement of harm.

DOCCS has consistently refused to conduct an independent investigation into the three deaths at Bedford Hills, and the policies Blot implemented remain active.

The demands of this campaign have not been met, and the women at Bedford Hills are still waiting for justice.

A ProPublica investigation published yesterday reveals that the NYPD's Community Response Team carried out stop-and-frisks without required audits, in direct defiance of a federal court order.

The unit was effectively created off the books, meaning officers' conduct wasn't formally tracked. In one early incident, an officer in an unmarked car swerved into oncoming traffic pursuing a man on a dirtbike, killing him and was penalized with 13 vacation days. 😳

A court order is meaningless if the institution it governs can simply operate outside the formal structures that make compliance possible.

The NYPD's deliberate creation of an "off the books" unit is strategic evasion of accountability.

Until there are binding consequences for departments that circumvent oversight, not just documentation of the violations, we will continue to see the same cycle of brutality, review, and impunity.

A man identified as Chidozie Wilson Okeke was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Brooklyn over the weekend and taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center after requesting medical attention, sparking a chaotic scene as hundreds of community members gathered outside to protest his detention. Witnesses say Okeke appeared injured and was dragged by agents while restrained, while ICE claims he resisted arrest and that only minimal force was used. The situation escalated as protesters attempted to block his removal, leading to clashes with police, multiple arrests, and allegations of excessive force, before agents ultimately transported him out of the hospital and into federal custody.

ICYMI, the police union is (still) up to no good.

Yesterday, the union filed an outrageous lawsuit against the civilian oversight board over the release of police misconduct records — which New York *already* made a definitive decision on when it repealed 50a in a historic campaign led by families whose loved ones were killed by police, organizations, and advocates.

In short, the PBA is attempting to make it more difficult to track patterns of abuse and intervene by further obscuring the messy and corrupt reality of police discipline. This lawsuit should be rejected for what it is: a blatant attempt to shield the full truth of police abuse and rollback hard won transparency measures.
