An initiative of The Gathering for Justice, Justice League NYC is a rapid response criminal justice task force that focuses on urgent racial justice issues.

Recent campaigns include The Gathering for Justice is a social justice organization founded by Harry Belafonte in 2005. The Gathering’s newest initiative, Justice League NYC, is a task force of youth justice activists, advocates and artists who have joined forces to contribute to awakening our moral and community conscious on issues negatively impacting society. Justice League NYC has begun a multi-stage mobilization engaging communities in New York's boroughs around the issue of juvenile justice reform. Justice League NYC is currently building a three-day Juvenile Justice Conference that will include a diverse and comprehensive slate of programs, panels, workshops, leadership seminars, think-tank gatherings, and arts and entertainment offerings, all focused on the urgent state of New York’s Juvenile Justice system. The Conference, entitled Growing Up Locked Down (GULD) will take place at The New School’s Tishman Auditorium from Wednesday, September 24th through Friday, September 26th 2014.

Days after a grand jury found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing in Nolan Wells’ tragic death, his family’s attorneys have shared the state’s autopsy results as well as digital forensics of the teenager’s phone from an expert hired by the family, which they say raise significant questions. The Jackson County District Attorney’s office has not responded to CNN’s questions or request for comment about the family’s latest claims.

August 31, 2026 marks one year from the legal deadline to Close Rikers. In the years since survivors of Rikers and impacted families pushed then-Mayor de Blasio to commit to closing Rikers, we’ve made historic progress, even against the opposition of former Mayor Eric Adams.

Since Mayor Mamdani assumed office, he’s taken important steps toward closing Rikers, and he must do more to prevent and reduce incarceration. With focused action, New York City can reduce the number of people in jail substantially by August 31, 2027, and strengthen community health and safety in the process.

Clarence Woodward, 41, died in NYC Department of Correction custody at the Robert N. Davoren Center on Rikers Island early this morning after being found in a medical emergency.

A correction officer conducting a facility tour called for the medical emergency around 5 a.m., officers provided aid before medical personnel and EMS arrived, and he was pronounced dead at 5:40 a.m.

He is the 7th person to die in DOC custody this year, and the second death in one week.

On Aug. 1, Arkansas State Trooper Moisses Arellano stopped 18-year-old Alisa Hackett near Manila for speeding, then threw her to the ground and punched her in the face during the arrest after which she filed a federal civil rights lawsuit (represented by Ben Crump) for excessive force and First Amendment retaliation, while Arkansas State Police has not placed him on leave, saying only it’s reviewing the use of force.

This is a school-based incident, not a street encounter. Our kids get pulled into the punitive system before they’re even adults. This story like so many others is why The Gathering For Justice exists today 21 years and counting.

San Antonio Express-News Officer Marc Laue was seething.

Minutes earlier, while patrolling the hallways of Judson High School, he had confronted a 15-year-old accused of pushing an assistant principal. The teenager, Jeremiah Johnson, had cursed at the officer and walked away.

The incident led to Johnson being handcuffed and Laue ramming his fists into the boy’s belly, body camera footage of the encounter shows.

The case underscores a concern that has been raised by parents and advocates since schools began stationing law enforcement on their campuses: that officers might clash with vulnerable students, derailing their lives.
