Right To The City Alliance (RTTC) emerged in 2007 with a strong and powerful vision to 1) halt the displacement of low-income people, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, LGBTQ communities, and youth of color, and 2) protect and expand affordable housing in tandem with a broader movement to build democratic, just, and sustainable communities. Since its inception, Right To The City has quickly grown to encompass over 90 community-based racial, economic, gender, and environmental justice organizations located in 26 states and 45 cities. Representing true grassroots power and leadership of the most impacted, RTTC’s member organizations weave together local on-the-ground organizing, policy, and advocacy campaigns to build a robust and unstoppable national movement for inclusive, healthy housing and community development.

Tax the rich 👉🏽 Fund housing for the people 🏡

In Los Angeles, several of RTTC’s member organizations (Beverly-Vermont Community Land Trust (BVCLT) 🏘️ , Community Power Collective , FC Tierra Libre (FCTL) InnerCity Struggle, T.R.U.S.T. South LA) organized to pass Measure ULA (United To House LA) by popular vote in November of 2022.

Since then, working Angelenos have fought hard to keep the transfer tax alive in the face of constant (failed) attacks by corporate real estate, and to implement funds according to community vision. A significant portion of the funding is set to expand social housing in Los Angeles.

On June 25th, organized tenants in NYC - the real estate capital of the world - won a historic rent freeze. For decades, working class residents have been building a cross-racial, multiethnic, intergenerational movement for fair and stable housing.

This win is part of a wave of fights across the country for stronger rent control to protect working people against displacement by corporate greed.

Shout out to our member organizations, CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities and Met Council On Housing , aMet Council On Housingalition of tenant and multi-racial working class organizations that helped make this rent freeze a reality. And to the tenants of NYC, thank you for showing the rest of us what’s possible.

Los Angeles voters made a choice.

They voted for Measure ULA so luxury real estate sales would help fund affordable housing, eviction defense, rent relief, and community-controlled housing.

Now wealthy real estate interests are trying to change the rules to protect their profits—and make it harder for communities to pass similar measures in the future.

When corporations don’t get their way, they try to rewrite the rules.

When communities organize, we can invest in keeping people housed.

Housing decisions should be made by the people who live in our communities—not billionaires and corporate real estate interests protecting their bottom line.

The housing crisis isn’t only about rising rents.

It’s about who benefits when corporations control housing.

Sherman Associates owns the Hilton hotel in Minneapolis that has housed ICE agents. The company also owns Turner Impact Capital, a “social investment” firm that owns rental properties across Minneapolis—where tenants have reported rising rents and neglected maintenance.

This is what happens when housing is treated as a financial asset instead of a public good.

The same corporate interests that profit from our homes can also profit from systems that destabilize our communities—all while claiming to invest in “social impact”.

Housing should serve people. Not corporate profits. Not authoritarian policies.

“State lawmakers must take action to uphold the will of Bay Staters by lifting the ban on rent control and allowing local jurisdictions to pass the rent stabilization ordinances that work best for their communities.”

Congress just passed what’s being called a “landmark” housing bill. The solutions being offered won’t bring the immediate relief working people need right NOW. So tenants, homeowners, mobile home park residents & small landlords will continue to organize, build power & win our demands for and until there are 🏘️✊🏾
