Explore Brooklyn history at Borough Hall - AKA Brooklyn's first subway station! 🚇

As part of a major modernization of the Borough Hall subway station, 1,000 square feet of original 1908 mosaic tilework has been restored and reinstalled, preserving details from Brooklyn’s very first subway station!

Alongside the historic tiles, a new 110-foot mosaic by artist Ruby Onyinyechi Amanze brings a playful new layer to the station. Titled "May Your Road Be Light and Fun," the MTA Arts & Design installation fills the passageway connecting the 2, 3, 4 and 5 trains with colorful characters, birds, and dreamlike forms.

The newly modernized station is also now fully ADA-accessible, bringing together accessibility, preservation, and public art in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn.

Join us on October 6 for the opening reception of 1-800 Happy Birthday, an interactive public art installation honoring the lives and legacies of Black and Brown people killed by police.

The evening begins with a performance by Samora Pinderhughes and The Healing Project Choir, followed by a community gathering at MoCADA.

🕊️ 5–6 PM | Performance at The Plaza at 300 Ashland
🕊️ 6–8 PM | Community gathering at MoCADA, 10 Lafayette Ave., 2nd Floor

Through music, memory, and collective reflection, 1-800 Happy Birthday invites us to remember each celebrant beyond the circumstances of their death and honor the fullness of the lives they lived.

The installation is free and open to the public 24 hours a day through December 1.
