Across the United States, women continue to show that when we work and organize together, we build power together.

Feminist organizer Carol Hanisch championed collective power through collective action in her 1969 essay “The Personal is Political.” More than 50 years later, this idea is still an underlying force in so much of what we fight for. The pressures women carry — economic insecurity, safety, bodily autonomy, being heard and believed — while personal, are also shared issues.

Today, Ms. Foundation continues to fight for personal issues alongside our grantee partners to build our collective power. Because the personal is still political. And the solution is still collective.

Ms. Foundation has always believed in resourcing work before it's fully seen—or funded.

Community-led solutions to advance birth justice have long existed. But the investment in this work was missing.

We launched the Birth Justice Initiative four years ago to close that gap. Since then, we've distributed $6.9M to 68 organizations across 26 states, DC, and Puerto Rico — resourcing Black, Indigenous, and other communities historically pushed to the margins.

We're proud to share our newest report, Birth Justice Now, reflecting on four years of funding, partnership, and learning.

Today, the promise of liberty and equality still remains out of reach for millions. But the work ahead continues.

In the words of National Partnership for Women & Families President and CEO Jocelyn Frye, "To make progress, we must be clear about who we are, who we have been, and where we need to go to forge a new direction and fight for a better future for all."

Creating a democracy that works for all is essential—and possible. That ideal has never been fully realized, and we're not backing down now. Ms. Foundation is proud to stand in this fight.

Yin Ling Leung first encountered Ms. Foundation in her 20s as an organizer for Asian Immigrant Women Advocates (AIWA). She saw that Ms. Foundation spoke the language of organizers and movement leaders, recognizing "the toxic combination of racial, class, and gender discrimination." Since then, she's worked with us from a variety of perspectives: as an organizer, a philanthropist, and now a board member.
