Happy ! As we honor the history of Native people in the U.S., the roles they've played, and the impact they've had, we honor Wilma Mankiller, Cherokee activist and social worker.

Mankiller was early board member for Ms. Foundation for Women, accepting a personal invitation from Gloria Steinem shortly after she launched the Foundation in 1973. In 1985, Mankiller became the first woman to serve as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, and the first woman elected as Chief of a major Native tribe. During her tenure, she advocated for better education, healthcare, and housing services for the Nation. Under her leadership, infant mortality declined and educational achievement advanced.

We stand with Jane Doe and all survivors of gender-based violence. Ms. Foundation was one of the first funders of sexual-assault hotlines and domestic violence shelters in the 1970s, and violence prevention has been core to our work since. We continue to fund grantee partners creating a just world, free from sexual assault and gender-based violence.

spotlights the essential, and often under-recognized, contributions of the Latine and Hispanic communities. Activists like Dolores Huerta remind us that collective power is built by collective action 🤝

In the 1960s, Huerta helped establish United Farm Workers of America, the largest farm workers union still protecting thousands of vegetable, berry, winery, tomato, and dairy workers. She and our Co-Founding Mother Gloria Steinem were longtime friends, first meeting in New York in 1967 while Huerta was leading the national grape boycott for farmworkers.

Earlier this year, Huerta came forward as a sexual assault survivor, in hopes of using her voice to empower others with similar experiences. Our love and admiration for her bravery is unwavering.
