Kol ha kavod to איגוד מרכזי הסיוע לנפגעות ולנפגעי תקיפה מינית (Assoc of R**e Crisis Centers in Israel)!

Trauma, fear, shame, and manipulation mean that many survivors of childhood sexual abuse are not able to report abuse for years, and sometimes decades. Extending the statute of limitations will give more survivors the opportunity to seek accountability, and have their voices heard.

Effective immediately, Israeli survivors of sexual abuse within the family can file criminal complaints until the age of 49, while survivors abused outside the family can file until the age of 48. The new Israeli law also extends the statute of limitations for serious sexual offenses committed against adults, recognizing that many survivors are unable to come forward immediately.

Our grant recipient 5050 שותפות ושוויון מגדרי is making progress in its campaign to get Israeli political parties to have gender-balanced slates with men and women in alternating “zipper” format.

*The הדמוקרטים (Democrats Party)'s final list is a 5050 zipper list, making it the first party in this election cycle to present a gender-balanced alternating official ticket.
* מפלגת ישר (Yashar Party), which is led by גדי איזנקוט - Gadi Eisenkot, has publicly committed to the zipper format, but has not yet announced its final slate.
* The Beyachad Party which includes Yesh Atid מפלגת יש עתיד and נפתלי בנט - Naftali Bennett's party, currently is 70 percent female, but has not committed to 5050 or the zipper format and has not yet determined its final candidate slate.
* The Blue and White Party ( בני גנץ - Benny Gantz )has agreed to increase the number of women on its slate but has not committed to the 5050 approach.
*Finally, a new Jewish-Arab party (Makom Lkulanu) has announced it will have a 5050 zipper list, but it is not expected to attract enough votes to gain a Knesset seat.

All final candidate lists are expected to be submitted around September 7, and the 5050 Initiative plans to keep up the public pressure on all political parties in the coming weeks!

In a book launch event at the Prime Minister's Residence in Jerusalem last month, Empowering Ethiopian Women celebrated the publication of its new book, "Nashim v'Shorashim" (Hebrew for "Women and Roots"). The book, which features pieces written by 48 Ethiopian Israeli women, seeks to "illuminate, strengthen, and empower women through the power of personal stories." The group plans to distribute the book to Israeli schools and other educational programs, in hopes that it will be "a source of inspiration, empowerment, and self-confidence." Among the stories is one by Batya Shmueli, who emigrated from Ethiopia with her family in 1991, at age 9. Shmueli, who recently served as a shaliach (Israeli emissary) in South Africa, shares her parents' history in Ethiopia, her experiences at youth villages and boarding schools, and her successful efforts to overcome expectations and earn university degrees. It's been a difficult week for advocates of gender equality in Israel: The Knesset passed a law allowing gender segregation in university graduate programs -- despite opposition from the universities themselves. And the city of B'nai Brak announced it is creating segregated sidewalks.

Here's what our grantee organization Israel Women's Network posted on Instagram (translated from Hebrew using Google Translate):

"They are counting on us getting tired. They are counting on us saying, 'That’s just how things are.' They are counting on us getting used to living with a policy that pushes us to the margins.
We won’t give them that satisfaction.
We are here to turn the tables.
Anyone who thinks we’re going to sit quietly while they dismantle our rights doesn’t know the women who make up this country."

We're so grateful to them, 5050 שותפות ושוויון מגדרי and the others working for a more equitable future. We need to support them!

The Hadassah Foundation is pleased to announce a Request for Proposals (RFP) from early-stage organizations that work through a gender lens, are creating social change, and strengthen the leadership capacity and role of self-identifying women and girls in Israel or the United States Jewish community.

Spark grants of $20,000 each will be awarded to three organizations that work to build a future in which women and girls live safer lives as fully participating members and leaders of their societies and communities.

We are inviting US-based foundations to participate in the Collaborative Fund for Gender Equity in Israel, a collective investment dedicated to strengthening Israel’s social resilience, advancing a vibrant civil society, and supporting the country’s long-term stability.

The fund’s goals are to pool resources for greater impact, foster peer learning and dialogue across the ﬁeld, and increase coordination to minimize duplication of efforts.

Contributions to the fund will support Connecting for Impact (CFI), a pioneering ﬁeld-building initiative convening women’s rights leaders and organizations located throughout Israel to drive collective impact.

In a letter Wednesday to IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and Defense Ministry Director General Amir Baram, 257 current and former female officers decried the “anti-women wave against female combat soldiers and women in the IDF.” The letter calls on the military and political leadership to stop the “takeover of the IDF by outside elements” and warns of damage to the chain of command.
