For the first time in Israel, neurosurgeons at the Hadassah Medical Organization have used intracranial Alpha DaRTยฎ radiation therapy to treat a patient with recurrent glioblastoma โ one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-treat brain tumors.
Led by Dr. Yigal Shoshan, HMO director of Neurosurgery, Oncology and Stereotactic Radiosurgery, the procedure is part of a Phase 1 clinical trial exploring a potentially new approach to treating recurrent glioblastoma.
What makes Alpha DaRT different? The technology delivers highly localized alpha radiation directly within the tumor, with the goal of maximizing tumor destruction while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy brain tissue.
And in a world first, Dr. Shoshan and his team used two simultaneous trajectories to implant the radiation sources into a large tumor while maintaining precision.
This moment represents years of work โ from laboratory research and preclinical studies to technological development and, now, clinical application.
