🧠 A first in Israel-- neurosurgeons at HMO have used intracranial Alpha DaRT® radiation therapy to treat a patient with recurrent glioblastoma — one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-treat brain tumors.

A first in Israel. A new direction for treating a deadly brain cancer. 🧠

For the first time in Israel, neurosurgeons at the Hadassah Medical Organization have used intracranial Alpha DaRT® radiation therapy to treat a patient with recurrent glioblastoma — one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-treat brain tumors.

Led by Dr. Yigal Shoshan, HMO director of Neurosurgery, Oncology and Stereotactic Radiosurgery, the procedure is part of a Phase 1 clinical trial exploring a potentially new approach to treating recurrent glioblastoma.

What makes Alpha DaRT different? The technology delivers highly localized alpha radiation directly within the tumor, with the goal of maximizing tumor destruction while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy brain tissue.

And in a world first, Dr. Shoshan and his team used two simultaneous trajectories to implant the radiation sources into a large tumor while maintaining precision.

This moment represents years of work — from laboratory research and preclinical studies to technological development and, now, clinical application.

“Seeing the technology reach a patient in Israel for the first time was an exciting moment for everyone who has been part of this journey,” said Dr. Shoshan.

It’s a powerful reminder of what can happen when research, technology and clinical expertise come together to pursue new possibilities for patients.

"Attempts to politicize medicine derail potentially lifesaving collaboration among health-care professionals, compromise global health and, ultimately, harm countless patients. The continued effort to isolate Israeli medical professionals is a thinly disguised attempt to normalize anti-Zionism and antisemitism."

In a new letter to The Lancet, Hadassah National President Carol Ann Schwartz and Hadassah Medical Organization Director General Dr. Yoram Weiss write about why hate has no place in healthcare. They highlight how Hadassah hospitals serve as a bridge to peace for patients and practitioners of every race, religion or nationality.
