🩺 Dr. Diekramabo Ikenna Aguwuom of Nigeria dreamed of becoming a spine surgeon, and Hadassah Medical Organization helped her achieve her dream. Full story below. ⤵️

Dr. Diekramabo Ikenna Aguwuom dreamed of becoming a spine surgeon. Her journey took her from Rivers State, Nigeria, to the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) — and ultimately back home with a mission to transform spine care for Nigerian patients.

As the first female orthopedic surgeon in Rivers State, Dr. Aguwuom already had an extraordinary record. But during a 2018 trauma fellowship at Hadassah, a chance encounter in the spine operating room with Dr. Joshua Schroeder, director of spine surgery, opened the door to something more.

Years later, that dream became reality when she returned to HMO in 2025 for a long-term fellowship in the Spine Unit.

“The Hadassah fellowship was a lifechanging experience for me,” she says.

Now, she’s bringing what she learned back to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital — with a goal of helping Nigerian patients receive quality spine care at home, rather than having to travel abroad for treatment.

From one operating room to a dream realized, Dr. Aguwuom’s story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when opportunity meets determination.

“You can have a dream, but sometimes when it becomes a reality, it is bigger than you imagined.”
