Welcome residents and alumni of International House New York!

Since 1924, I-House has welcomed bright young people from all over the world to live, learn and grow together through a transformative experience that prepares them to join and lead the conversations that will change the world. In addition to safe and comfortable housing within a New York City historic landmark, I-House offers a unique array of programming and opportunities that foster cross-cultural connection and lifelong friendships. The I-House experience doesn't end with residency; community members are welcomed into the global Alumni network for life, joining more than 65K postgraduates from all over the world who have called I-House home. Through this simple but radical idea, we have built a network of globally-minded leaders who go on to live lives guided by the values of Respect for differences, Empathy for others, and the Moral Courage to act for what is right.

May I have this dance? 💃🌹

Ballroom dance classes are officially back at I-House. The art of dance has been a part of the I-House experience for generations. The tradition of ballroom classes traces all the way back to the days of Herman "HR" Rottenberg. HR established and oversaw the Performing Arts Foundation and, with his wife Lenore, started dance classes and performances featuring residents.

We're excited to partner with instructor Sophie Cazeneuve to bring ballroom back to the House. Residents: Classes are taught every other week. Come join in the fun and learn to dance the night away.

Last week at the House: I-House residents gathered in the Home Room for a conversation with Michel Khalaf, President & CEO of MetLife, and Glenn Hubbard, Dean Emeritus of Columbia Business School.

“Resilience and Flexibility: The Journey to CEO” was the latest entry in I-House’s Distinguished Speaker Series. The evening's discussion explored the traits of effective leaders and the value of taking an unconventional path to leadership. Khalaf and Hubbard shared words of wisdom, stories of career success and setbacks, and a few of the many lessons learned along the way.

Dinner with friends (and a live mariachi band) 🎺🎻

Huge thanks to everyone who joined us for this week's Dinner with Friends honoring Hispanic Heritage Month. Residents enjoyed a buffet of Latin American cuisine, played games like lotería, truco, and dominoes, and danced to the awesome musical stylings of Mariachi Fiesta NY. Big shout-out to the HHM Resident Committee for helping organize!

Storytelling for all! 🎤📝

The Moth came to I-House this week for an interactive information session and sample class to kick off our fall engagement. The Moth is a world-renowned, global storytelling nonprofit. Their mission is to inspire people to listen and share openly, think and feel deeply, and expand their understanding of one another. We'll be partnering throughout the fall semester thanks to the generous support of I-House alum Joel Stratte-McClure ’71.

Residents gathered in the Dining Hall for a hands-on cooking class with our world-class I-House dining staff. We celebrated the start of a new year at I-House this Sunday, welcoming residents, trustees, and friends of the House in Davis Hall. President Sebastian Fries delivered opening remarks, followed by a keynote address from NYU Professor of Psychology & Neural Science Jay Van Bavel. Dr. Van Bavel spoke about the secret science of I-House and the remarkable ways this century-old social experiment brings us all together. Huge thanks to:

I-House’s Distinguished Speaker Series returned last week, kicking off the academic year with I-House alumnus Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering ‘71. 🇪🇺 🇩🇪

Dr. Pöttering is a celebrated historian, politician, and former President of the European Parliament (2007-2009). He served as Chairman of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation from 2010 to 2017. The evening’s discussion focused on U.S.-European relations, with reflections on the past, present, and future. Following his keynote address, Dr. Pöttering sat down with Steven Sokol, President of the American Council on Germany, for a moderated discussion and Q&A session with I-House residents.

A very special thanks to Dr. Pöttering, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, and American Council on Germany. It was a privilege to host you all! 🌍🏠

This week at the House: Residents kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with a celebration of Mexican Independence Day. 🇲🇽

The evening marked our first Cultural Hour of the year, which celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of the I-House community through presentations, arts, food, and more. Residents heard from the HHM Resident Committee and learned about the rich culture of Mexico, the history of Mexican Independence Day, and the El Grito, or Cry of Independence. We even took a few swings at a piñata. (It was quickly reduced to a pile of candy. 🪅🍬)
