Meet Our Week 12 Professor – Jay Kemp

We’re excited to welcome Janai “Yannae” Kemp, better known as Jay Kemp, as our Week 12 professor for the Rites of Passage Program, where he will be leading a discussion on Present-Day African American Issues.

Jay is a cultural educator, youth advocate, speaker, media personality, and community leader whose work sits at the intersection of hip hop, healing, Black identity, and social transformation.

With more than 20 years of experience mentoring youth and facilitating conversations around race, trauma, culture, media influence, and systems of oppression, Jay brings a perspective that is both deeply informed and rooted in lived experience.

He has spoken and facilitated workshops at institutions including Yale University, UConn, and Quinnipiac University, challenging audiences to think critically about the social, political, and psychological forces shaping Black communities today.

Jay is also the creator of the groundbreaking lecture “The Hip Hop Perversion,” a nationally recognized presentation examining the relationship between government, media, corporate influence, and hip hop culture. He later brought this work directly into the classroom through a Hip Hop Sociology course, helping students analyze the intersections of music, race, economics, identity, and systemic inequities.

From his work as creator of the Moving Target Podcast and Radio Show to his role as a youth leader and transformational speaker, Jay continues to empower young people to find their voice, understand their history, and envision a future beyond survival.

As we enter our final week of class before preparing for Ghana, we are honored to have Jay challenge our scholars to think critically about the issues impacting Black communities today and their role in shaping tomorrow.

Weeks 2 & 3 of the Breaking Chains Focus Group challenged our students to think deeper, speak louder, and reflect about the realities impacting our communities every day. Swipe through to hear some of our conversations. ➡️

From restorative justice and the school-to-prison pipeline to conversations around trauma, violence, social media, and accountability. Our students are not just learning about the issues… they’re building solutions together.

This is more than a focus group.
This is awareness, healing and leadership.

Next week, we will host a special panel featuring formerly incarcerated individuals sharing their lived experiences with our students. These are the real-life perspectives our students need as they begin curating their mock reform bills and exploring what meaningful reform can look like.

And trust us… the panelists are 🔥
We might just have to go live. 👀

Week 9 – Civil Rights Movement (Part I) & Unsung Heroes

As our scholars dive into the Civil Rights Movement, we took a moment to honor one of our own, Rev. Mary McBride- Lee 💜

At just 17 years old, Rev. Lee showed incredible courage by marching alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama. It was a pivotal and tragic moment in history where peaceful protesters were met with brutal violence while fighting for the right to vote.

We have to remind our students that if someone is still here to tell the story, that means it’s didn’t happen too long ago.

Rev. Lee’s life is a living testament to resilience, faith, and service. She continues to pour into her community as a reverend, educator, councilwoman, and community activist, and we are so grateful for her continued support of the Rites of Passage program. We hope to take her to Ghana with us in the near future!

Thank you, Rev. Lee, for your courage, your legacy, and your commitment to our youth and our community. We appreciate all that you do! 💐

She also has two books for sale and if you’re lucky and we can possibly get you a signed copy. Just reach out to us.

📚 Week 8 of 13 – The Harlem Renaissance

This week looks a little different.

Our scholars are taking the lead as they break into groups and teach what they’ve learned through their research on the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a powerful era of Black creativity, culture, and expression.

We are officially over halfway through and approaching the finish line… Next stop: Ghana ✈️🌍🇬🇭

The growth, confidence, and knowledge being built in this space is everything.

We also want to shoutout for showcasing another side of the Harlem Renaissance that is often times left out.

Cheers to Becoming 🥂✨💕

Celebrate the first step.
Celebrate the motion in-between.
Celebrate the lessons.
Celebrate the GROWTH.
Celebrate the version of you that didn’t give up!!!

You don’t have to “arrive” to be worthy of a moment.

You’re currently living in at least one answered prayer. 🙌🏾✨

Pause. Breathe. Acknowledge it.

Cheers to you, Queen! 👑✨💕
