Raquel, finalista de la competencia We the Poets, nos narra sobre la persona que inspiró su poema: su padre. El padre de Raquel, un poeta y soñador de la República Dominicana, emigró a los Estados Unidos en busca de trabajo y una vida digna para su familia. Gracias a los esfuerzos y sacrificios de su padre, Raquel tiene la oportunidad de ejercer profesionalmente como poeta.

Este mes de la herencia latina celebramos el poder de nuestras comunidades; el esfuerzo de nuestras personas mayores para proveernos una vida digna, como nos inspiran y lo formativo que ha sido su conocimiento e historia en nuestros esfuerzo de organización política.

Con elles en nuestras mentes y corazones, nos dirigimos a las urnas este 3 de noviembre. Entendemos el poder que tiene el voto para asegurar la dignidad de nuestras comunidades inmigrantes, crear un país libre donde se respeten los derechos humanos y luchar por un futuro mejor.

🎒Please join us for our new democracy defense project🎒
✊📚🍎Protect Public Education. Protect Democracy. ✊🤝🗳 We will kick off one week from today, on September 30, from 6:30- 8 pm on Zoom

We are only weeks away from seeing whether or not Democracy stands a chance against ongoing efforts to undermine elections. It is more important than ever that everyone, everywhere understands what is happening and what we can do to save our democracy and protect our vote!

Protecting our democracy protects our public schools.

Right now, the federal government is making wildly unpopular decisions like funneling public money to private schools, underfunding schools, reducing students' civil rights by dismantling the Department of Education, and slashing billions of dollars from schools through Medicaid and other cuts. If we want a chance to change these decisions, we need to protect our vote and be prepared to defend the results of free and fair elections.

We are bringing people together to learn more about what threats we will face during and after the upcoming elections and what we can all do about it.

These trainings will help everyone gain the following skills:

👩‍🏫 Strategize on election defense challenges and how to safely take nonviolent action

🤝 Create a local solidarity network to share information and be ready to activate to protect and defend our democracy

🏫 Understand what these threats mean to public education and how we can protect our students and our communities to ensure everyone has the freedom to thrive in safe and welcoming public schools.

Our vote is our power. And this administration is trying to seize control of our elections to make sure it doesn’t count.

Rather than earn our votes by fixing what is failing, Trump and his administration want to take away our right to vote and attempt a federal takeover of our elections. They are pushing for laws that will block millions from voting, spreading disinformation about our elections, and attacking the basic rights that define full citizenship and equal protection under the law.

Today, on National Voting Registration Day we went to Capitol Hill, along with hundreds of voting rights advocates, election workers and community leaders from across the country, to demand Congress to protect our voting and constitutional rights ahead of the midterms.

This International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember the people we‘ve lost and we name what’s being done with the money won in their name.

Opioid settlement dollars are meant to keep communities alive. Instead, states are spending them on police gear, jail beds, and plugging holes in budgets that were already funded.

Organizers in New York, New Jersey, Maine, and Kentucky know what works. They‘re already doing it with almost none of this money.
