Join us at CultureHub NYC on Tuesday, October 27th for a workshop with artist and creative technologist viola he. Using the Terminal and the command line, participants will navigate and create on a shared computer.

💻Through learning and playing, viola invites you to gently look at your relationship with your computer, using small everyday gestures in the terminal: checking where you are, naming things, making a place for yourself, and visiting your friends.

📂We will start by looking through the folders on our own laptops from the terminal. Then everyone logs into the same shared computer, where we will learn bash basics, a language for talking directly to a computer, play an escape room game, and each build a room out of text files, folders, and small scripts. Along the way, we will reflect on how we use, organize, and care for our computers, alone and together.

Beginners curious about the terminal and coding are welcome. Bring your own laptop (Mac, Windows, or Linux)!

Join us in the CultureHub studio on Wednesday, October 21st for Expanded Cinema, a workshop led by artist and filmmaker Lívia Sá.

🎞️ Through historical examples, film excerpts, photographs, live demonstrations, and hands-on experimentation using analog film and projection equipment, participants to will experiment with manipulating, transforming, and reimagining the moving image.

📽️ The workshop will cover artists and filmmakers who have challenged conventional approaches to image-making through techniques such as direct manipulation of film, scratching and painting on film, photograms, abstraction, multiple exposures, and the use of light and chemical processes as creative tools for image-making, presentation, and projection.

🎥 The workshop will conclude with a hands-on experimentation session using 35mm film, a slide projector, and an overhead projector. Working with transparent materials, images, light, and colorful elements, participants will experiment with layering, transparency, projection, and direct interventions on photographic material, exploring how small changes to an image can produce unexpected visual results.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own 35mm positive film or slides to work with. For those unable to bring materials, a limited number of 35mm Ektachrome frames will be provided for participants to manipulate and transform into their own slides.

Give a new home to old tech gadgets! Stop by the CultureHub studio Garage Sale to add some gear to your collection. Affordable prices reflect use and some pieces that are in need of light repairs or creative re-use.

Retired equipment on offer includes: VR headsets, tablets, lighting instruments, audio interfaces, and an inflatable pool.

Everything must go! Any equipment not sold by 6:30pm ET on Wednesday, September 30th will be laid to rest in an equipment funeral. All are welcome to attend. Wearing black is encouraged. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to culturehub.org.

CultureHub members will receive a 50% discount on all equipment for sale.

Next Thursday (September 24th) CultureHub Resident Artist Jeffrey Alan Scudder takes over our Los Angeles studio for an evening of playful experimental computer music.

Scudder will present two new pieces, Note(s)pat(ial) Native & The MacNeoPolitan Trio.

Note(s)pat(ial) Native boots six surplus grade-school laptops into AC OS, the operating system Scudder makes; each machine holds one channel of the studio’s surround system, and from a live control surface he turns the whole field through the room, changes its speed, and hands voices between machines. The piece is grown live from a fixed 1:41 recording and can go differently every time it is played.

The MacNeoPolitan Trio is newer — three MacBook Neos, indigo, citrus, and blush, each played through Menu Band, the piano that lives in the menu bar beside the clock and the battery. A guest set between the two will be announced. The evening closes with a conversation, and the instruments will stay on for the room to play.

Join us in welcoming Jeffrey Alan Scudder as a 2026-2027 CultureHub Resident.
 Jeffrey will activate CultureHub’s Los Angeles studio with his custom software based projects Note(s)pat(ial) Native and The MacNeoPolitan.

Jeffrey Alan Scudder is a Los Angeles–based artist, educator, and technologist who builds musical instruments and creative tools. He writes Aesthetic.Computer, created Whistlegraph and recently released AC Native — a bootable operating system that turns aging laptops into instruments — and Menu Band, a piano that lives in the macOS menu bar. Scudder holds an MFA from Yale School of Art and is Author in Residence at UCLA Social Software.

On Saturday September 19th, Jeffrey will host a workshop he calls grokaesthetic, in which participants will learn to play with a network of small interactive pieces and instruments that runs in the browser.

On Thursday September 24th, Jeffrey will orchestrate a musical performance distributed amongst reanimated old computers running his bespoke operating system, AC OS.

☀️ What if light became the material?

🔵 Join us in the CultureHub studio on October 3rd for a workshop led by artist Ella Barnes (E L L A). Ella will introduce an experimental approach to camera-less photography, using cyanotype as a way of working directly with light. Stepping into a hands-on process where iron salts, light, and water come together in alchemical transformation, participants will create unique cyanotype prints while exploring the subtle and abundant phenomena of light.

🔹Working with simple yet intriguing materials, participants will construct ephemeral assemblages to project composed shadow images, revealing the intricate relationships between shadow, transparency, distance, and form. In this immersive workshop, the cyanotype process becomes a way of slowing down, observing with full presence, and discovering the curious phenomena that arise when light itself becomes the subject.

🌀 Participants will leave with a collection of original cyanotype prints on archival paper and an entirely new way of perceiving light and shadow.

No previous experience is required. All materials are provided.

To grok something is to understand it so deeply it becomes part of you — this workshop is hands-on time for grokking Aesthetic.Computer, CultureHub Resident Artist Jeffrey Alan Scudder’s creative-computing system: a network of small interactive pieces and instruments, all open source, that runs in the browser on whatever device you bring. Participants learn its commands and play notepat, the system’s flagship instrument. The room builds toward playing together as one ensemble in the studio’s surround system.

No programming or musical experience is required, and loaner machines are available for anyone without a computer to bring. Part workshop, part hangout — with snacks and extreme nerdiness — everything participants install is theirs to keep playing at home, and the session opens the same instruments Scudder performs at CultureHub LA on September 24.
